A group of protesters expressing their support for Palestine confronted Chicago police on Tuesday during a rally outside the Israeli Consulate downtown.
A crowd of people gathered around 7 p.m. CT outside the consulate, which is located over 1 mile from the United Center, where the DNC is being held.
There were also some pro-Israel protesters present.
Following a series of speeches, protesters set fire to a couple of flags, including one that represented the United States and another that combined elements of the American flag and the star of David.
The group then proceeded to step onto the street and continued their journey.
During various instances, demonstrators engaged with law enforcement and successfully maneuvered past CPD barricades, proceeding to march within the vicinity.
Protesters were also observed striking police officers with wooden placards.
Hundreds of Chicago police officers have encircled the group in an attempt to encourage the protesters to disperse, occasionally guiding them onto the sidewalk.
The protest is prohibited by the city.
There were numerous arrests captured on camera, and the situation prompted a swift response from the police.
Another leader of the protest was observed being apprehended, as well.
An organization known as Behind Enemy Lines orchestrated the rally.
Before the Democratic National Convention, the organization has been actively involved in organizing protests, distributing pamphlets, and rallying support for Palestinians while expressing their opposition to the DNC.
Leaders supporting the Palestinian cause, who are participating in Monday’s March on the DNC, have clarified that they are not affiliated with Tuesday’s rally.
Chicago Police Superintendent Larry Snelling arrived at the scene around 8 p.m.
A group known as Behind Enemy Lines organized the rally, which is not authorized by the city.
Snelling spoke at the protest earlier on Tuesday.
“Well, what I can tell you is that you never know what to anticipate from a group like that. However, I can share what I anticipate from our side, specifically our Chicago police officers who will be handling the situation.” And, despite the opinions expressed by the CPD, we will trust in our training. We will remain committed to upholding the rights enshrined in the First Amendment while also ensuring the safety and well-being of all individuals in this city,” he stated.
There was worry due to the events depicted in Behind Enemy Lines, which portrayed the violence during the 1968 Democratic National Convention. It raised concerns about potential similar incidents on Tuesday, with a focus on Chicago police, politicians, delegates, and media.
According to a website for the group, there are indications of aggressive strategies. And, not too long ago, individuals from the organization disrupted a DNC volunteer recruitment event.
Based on a Chicago police report obtained by ABC7 Chicago’s I-Team, individuals disrupted the event by forcefully taking control of a microphone and physically confronting a volunteer when security intervened. However, they all hurriedly made their way towards the exits, seeking safety.
Behind Enemy Lines disputed CPD’s account of the events, stating to the I-Team that they were not fleeing but rather forcefully removed by United Center security. The group stated that protesting the DNC and volunteer recruitment event was the appropriate course of action.
The incident raised significant concerns, leading to a threat assessment conducted by the FBI, Secret Service, and CPD. The assessment highlighted the group’s intention to create additional disruptions during the DNC.
“We have prepared extensively for potential situations that may require us to respond and strategically allocate resources.” So, we’ll carefully monitor the situation as it unfolds, and we’ll be prepared to deploy any necessary resources or assets to maintain control. “We are ready,” Snelling stated.
