Phase Two Of Shanghai Lockdown Begins. 16 Million Citizens To Be Tested In The Coming Days.

According to China’s state-run media, Chinese officials plan to test 16 million inhabitants in western Shanghai in the following days, after the city began the second phase of its lockdown on April 1.

Meanwhile, residents in eastern and southern Shanghai who hoped to resume regular life on April 1 following a four-day lockdown have been advised that they may be confined to their homes for much longer, signaling that the city’s COVID-19 outbreak is far from over.

For over a month, China has been fighting the Omicron variant of the CCP virus, with Shanghai being one of the hardest-hit areas. On April 1, the city recorded 4,502 new illness cases, while the true figure could be far higher, as experts and several Chinese people have previously claimed that Chinese officials underreport infection statistics.

Shanghai officials began implementing a two-stage lockdown on March 28 in response to an increase in infection cases, with the goal of testing the city’s entire population of 26 million people. The first phase of the lockdown, which targeted people in Pudong and Pusan, districts on the east and south sides of Shanghai’s Huangpu River, was meant to expire on April 1st at 5 a.m. local time.

New limitations for Pudong and Punan, however, were issued by city officials on March 31 about 8 p.m. local time.

All locals living in residential areas where illness cases have been reported would be restricted to their houses for at least another 10 days under the new rules. Areas that have already been closed will be closed for another three days. There will be more testing aimed at citizens in these locations as well.

The second phase, which began at 3 a.m. local time on April 1, imposes a four-day lockdown on people in the Puxi district, which is located west of the river.

The Chinese regime’s draconian “zero-COVID” policy, in which officials track down every single viral case in the hopes of eliminating the virus entirely, includes mass testing and restricting people to their homes.

In Shanghai, the policy has included actions such as the suspension of public transportation, the closure of non-essential companies, and the restriction of road access.

These tactics have stoked widespread resentment in China.

Some citizens in Shanghai have complained about a lack of food and medicine as a result of the extended lockdown. After their loved ones tested positive for COVID-19 and were sequestered in hospitals, other residents complained about not being able to talk to their family members on the phone.

China’s continued use of stringent quarantine measures, such as lockdowns, may have a negative impact on the country’s economy.

Mobility constraints due to lockdowns might “shave off 1.8 percentage points drop in China’s GDP during Q1 2022,” according to a research report published on March 30 by French bank Natixis.

“What appears evident now is that meeting the 5.5 percent growth target set by the government work report will face rising headwinds, since China’s GDP will be under greater pressure than previously predicted for Q1 and more uncertainty will likely arrive in the following quarters,” Natixis says.

China’s National Bureau of Statistics said on March 31 that the country’s manufacturing and services sectors both shrank in March for the first time since early 2020.

The official purchasing managers’ index (PMI) fell to 49.5 in March from 50.2 in February. Meanwhile, the non-manufacturing PMI dropped from 51.6 in February to 48.4 in March.

As far as the CDC goes, they have to play at a different game; By over-reporting COVID-19 contraction and death statistics, they’re able to coerce citizens into believing that the situation is much more dire than it actually is.
