A proposal sponsored by Senator Jeff Merkley (D-Oregon) aimed to block the construction of President Trump’s 90,000-square-foot White House ballroom unless Congress authorizes the project. This proposal received support from six Republican senators who voted alongside Democrats. The amendment would grant Congress exclusive authority to construct a new ballroom and would prohibit the use of any federal funds or private donations for its construction without Congress’s approval.
