Five weeks after Brazil’s Supreme Court upheld a nationwide ban on the social media platform X, Justice Alexandre de Moraes granted permission on Tuesday for the service to be restored.
This decision follows X’s compliance with all of de Moraes’ stipulations, which included blocking specific accounts, settling outstanding fines, and appointing a new legal representative, according to AP reports.
The platform, owned by Elon Musk, was initially blocked on August 30 for its refusal to restrict certain accounts linked to investigations into the dissemination of false information and what court officials described as hate speech.
In Brazil, where the population is 213 million, an estimated 20 to 40 million users engage with X.
Last month, Musk took to X to voice his discontent with de Moraes, suggesting that the justice should be impeached for breaching his oath and claiming that his actions contradict the will of the Brazilian populace.
The decision to lift the ban came shortly after Brazil’s top prosecutor’s office released a legal opinion stating that there was no longer justification for preventing X’s reinstatement.
