Hollywood’s portrayal of Jesus is a bold, Black, lesbian woman with a shaved head.
The leading figure in the fresh revival of “Jesus Christ, Superstar” is a bald-headed, black queer woman. Cynthia Erivo is set to take on the role of Jesus Christ in the Hollywood Bowl’s production of the renowned Andrew Lloyd Webber musical.
Erivo is a passionate advocate for the LGBT community.
“Standing before you: Black, bald-headed, pierced, and queer, I can confidently say I understand what it means to be the other,” she expressed at a gala for the Los Angeles LGBT Center last year.
In 2022, Erivo publicly embraced her bisexuality in an interview with British Vogue.

In 2022, Erivo revealed her bisexuality in an exclusive feature for British Vogue.
“I have always held a profound admiration for those who can completely embrace their genuine selves, flaunting their queerness like a feather boa and confidently declaring, ‘This is a beautiful part of who I am,’” she said. “I often expressed that it seemed as though I was observing my own community from within a glass enclosure.” There you all stood — radiant, enchanting, and enveloped in love, while I found myself with my nose pressed against the glass, observing you from a distance, separate and apart. It required patience for me to transcend my limitations.
Her casting was clearly intended to ridicule and belittle individuals of faith. “With all due respect, I believe Cynthia Erivo may not be the right fit to portray Jesus.” Pastor John Amanchukwu expressed on X that casting a woman as Jesus Christ is a deliberate act of blasphemy that would provoke outrage from Hollywood if it were applied to other religions. Currently, there is no announcement regarding the release of a musical centered on the Prophet Muhammad in Hollywood. However, if they were to do so, it seems improbable that Muhammad would be depicted as a bald-headed queer woman.
It doesn’t matter what I think. It doesn’t matter what you think. It only matters what The Most High God and Jesus think.
