Among the casualties of the Israelites, Balaam, the son of Beor and a practitioner of divination, met his demise by sword.
Joshua demonstrated unwavering obedience to the Lord as he successfully conquered and annihilated the kings and cities scattered across the Promised Land. Only a small portion remained, and the Lord made a promise to remove them. The Lord distributed the land among the tribes of Israel.
Within the narrative of the land’s division, there is an intriguing mention regarding Balaam. He attempted to curse Israel but ended up bestowing blessings upon them instead. However, driven by his desire for wealth, he discovered an alternative path. He suggested that the opposing king could entice the men by employing female agents. Numbers 31:16 contains an intriguing passage. The women were then to guide the men in worshiping false gods. By understanding this, Balaam was aware that God would ultimately oppose and confront Israel.
Balaam was correct. Separation from God occurs when we engage in sinful behavior, which in turn invites divine judgment. Balaam certainly received his financial reward. However, Moses observed the situation, and the Lord intervened by sending a plague to halt it. What benefits did Balaam receive from his financial gains? There was an individual who possessed a unique ability to listen to divine guidance, but unfortunately, their strong desire for material wealth led them to disregard the importance of following that guidance.
A compromise can often seem like a reasonable choice in certain situations. It seems like we can enjoy the benefits of both options. He did not directly disobey God’s command, but rather provided guidance to the enemy king on how to engage in spiritual warfare against Israel.
Then he believed he could acquire the funds without directly speaking ill of Israel. It is considered sinful to encourage others to engage in sinful behavior. Engaging in actions that go against our beliefs can lead us to partake in the wrongdoing of others. The outcome was the appropriate judgment he received. Those who possess knowledge of God’s will and choose to go against it bear a greater responsibility than those who are unaware.
Remember: It’s always important to maintain our integrity. What we long for in this life will hold no significance in the grand scheme of eternity. Focus on the eternal truths and what brings joy to God’s heart.
