Brigitte Stegemann died by lethal injection on July 10 at The Pearl, a care home in Cannifton, Ontario, after being diagnosed with Stage IV stomach cancer. Family members claim that Stegemann, a devout Christian, had already turned down MAID because it went against her faith. “No, I don’t want that,” Stegemann told relatives, according to the family, who said that her wish was to die naturally.
Stegemann’s granddaughter and longtime caregiver, Brigitte Kranendonk, said the process moved forward anyway, and sped up while she was away on vacation. The family alleges later assessments showed Stegemann couldn’t keep basic family details straight, though a doctor still found her eligible. Two days before the scheduled procedure, Kranendonk said she asked her grandmother point-blank whether she understood she was going to die that Friday.
Stegemann broke down and cried for about 45 minutes, then said she had made a “mistake,” according to the family. Relatives also claimed that at one point she ripped out a medical port while screaming that she didn’t want “the death shot.”
Kranendonk said the morning of July 10 was chaotic. A nurse’s first attempt to insert an IV failed, leaving blood on Stegemann, her bedding and the floor.When the doctor arrived and asked about giving her “medicine,” Kranendonk said her grandmother didn’t speak, nod or open her eyes, while her hands were folded in prayer.
The doctor went ahead with the euthanization and Stegemann was dead within roughly 10 minutes.Kranendonk said her grandmother gave “no acknowledgment, no head nod, nothing” that morning, and that a final verbal check for consent was promised before the injection but never happened.
Relatives also alleged paperwork was completed after Stegemann had already died, and that the care home hadn’t handed over records that they requested.On top of a police investigation, the family has filed complaints with Ontario’s chief coroner and the provincial patient ombudsman.
The Pearl and Belleville Police did not respond to Fox News’ requests for comment.
Human life is sacred.
Biblical ethics centers on human life’s sacredness. Genesis 1:27 says God made everyone in his image. This God image remains the same regardless of age, health, or illness. God made us all equal, so everyone is valuable.
This makes humans unique among living creatures since they are built in God’s image and have the same worth, value, and dignity as humans.
This signifies that murder is especially evil and banned in the Bible. In the Noah covenant, God says:
“He whose blood is shed by man will have his own blood shed by man.”
God created man in his image.
Jude 9:6 ESV
People made in God’s image shouldn’t be killed. A person who murders without authorization shall be executed.
Finally, “You shall not kill.” (Exodus 20:13) is the sixth law. One or more persons commit murder by planning and killing another. Exodus 21 deals with battle and accident killing, but this is different.
“Those who kill someone with a single blow will be put to death.” But if God allows it, they should flee to a spot I’ll identify. However, anyone who intends to kill must be brought off my altar and killed.

Accidental killing is authorized rather than murder to avoid retaliation. War and self-defense (Exodus 22:2-3) are likewise regulated. It’s also evident that governmental execution is not murder.
Euthanasia, however, is intentional murder and violates the sixth commandment. Because it destroys someone made in God’s image, it is a willful act of disobedience against God.
The Bible mentions euthanasia.
Suicide appears in several Bible stories. After being wounded in fight, King Saul died. Saul was hurt and ordered his armor-bearer to kill him:
Then Saul commanded his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and cut me through, so these uncircumcised people don’t come and hurt me.” His armor bearer was too terrified to. So Saul grasped his sword and collapsed.
ESV 1 Samuel 31:4
Despite King Saul’s authority, the armor bearer refused. Another person told David he performed what King Saul asked. I feel like I’m dying, but I’m alive. Saul told him, “Stand here with me and kill me!” 2 Sam 1:9. David ordered the man’s execution because he had killed the Lord’s chosen one (2 Samuel 1:14–16). These two stories convey that we should not help anyone commit suicide, even if they are in suffering (“in the throes of death”), in a war zone, or in authority and can tell us to. Thus, “consent” does not modify the rightness of an action. Murder is murder regardless of intent.
Abimelech perished when a woman flung a millstone at him, breaking his head. The Bible states:
He hastily shouted to his armor-bearer, “Draw your sword and kill me, or they’ll say, ‘A woman killed him.'” Young man shoved him through, killing him.
Judges 9:54 (ESV)
This indicates Abimelech’s acts and personality are attacked. Being killed by his armor bearer is a shameful conclusion for a nasty character in the story. We oppose his suicide request because it’s the end of a horrible life.
Why not commit suicide?
Most people believe suicide is unlawful since the rule against murder covers self-murder. Matthew 22:39 instructs Christians to “love your neighbor as yourself.” This assumes we love ourselves simply. Sadly, some can lose this, making them consider suicide. So suicide is self-hatred, not self-love. Many people doubt life’s purpose and give up after experiencing great suffering or loss. This demonstrates what suffering is like and how you felt.
When Jonah quit, he stated,
“So now, Lord, please take away my life, because it’s better for me to die than live.”
God inquired, “Do you do well to be angry?”
ESV John 4:3–4.
Instead of suicide, he requested the Lord to kill him. However, God said he was acting badly.
Job cursed his birth (Job 3:1–26) and desired to die (Job 3:21), but he never considered suicide.
Many Psalmists cry out to God in pain, yet they never condone suicide. “Darkness is my closest friend” (v. 18) is a famous statement from Psalm 88, but the author nevertheless prays to God day and nite. There will be pain because the world is broken. Not everyone will be pain-free. We often want to detest ourselves and lie about the world and ourselves. People usually assist us turn our brains and lives back to the truth.
The Ephesians letter to males says:
A man who loves his wife loves himself. Everyone loves their skin, much like Christ loves the church since we are his body.
Eph 5:28–29
It is reiterated that people should cherish and feed their bodies. If you love your body, you won’t kill yourself. Self-pity, not self-love.
After a suicide, others must pick up the pieces. We feel terrible for anyone who wants to commit suicide, but this is usually selfish.
We should also remember that suicide will start eternal pain for non-Christians. Most importantly, Christians should give unhappy and hopeless people as many chances as possible to find the One who can end their misery.
Different death views
Sin causes death, according to Genesis 2:17 and Romans 5:12. This enemy will be defeated (1 Corinthians 15:26, 54–56). Unless Christ returns, we all die (Hebrews 9:27).
Death is unpleasant, but we know it has been destroyed (1 Corinthians 15:54–56) and we will be with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6–8). Paul should depart and be with Christ rather than suffer here. Philippians 1:21: “For to me to live is Christ and to die is gain.” Even though we’ll cease our misery when we die, that’s no cause to commit suicide.
When viewing death through the Bible, we should not save all lives. In spiritual terms, death is not the end. There is a balance between not accelerating death and not extending life. Medical technology allows pricey and invasive life extension. Biblically, patients should die naturally with no intervention. Not giving someone food or drink to hasten up their death is wrong, but patients don’t have to agree to every medical treatment.
The Bible also declares that God counts our days (Psalm 139:16) and gives and takes life (Job 1:20). Many favor euthanasia because they believe people should not have full control over their deaths[1]. Palliative care has improved in helping the sick and suffering. We trust the Lord to determine death.
Death is when the spirit leaves the body, says the Bible. “The body without the spirit is dead,” James 2:26 explains. “So also faith without works is dead.”
Jesus prayed, “Father, take my spirit!” before dying. Luke 23:46. He subsequently “gave up his spirit” (John 19:30; Matthew 27:50).
Although not a medical definition, Biblical death makes sense after medical death. Unless there are evident symptoms of brain inactivity, the Bible considers comatose or sleepy people alive.
Eliminating pain
The Bible states that dying people should get painkillers:
“Give a strong drink to someone who is dying and wine to someone who is in great pain.”
ESV Proverbs 31:6
In some cases, painkillers can kill. If the purpose was to relieve pain, shortening life is not murder. Someone killed the patient while trying to aid. This is a “double effect.”
Families care for parents and grandparents, according to the Bible. Paul writes:
“Protect actual widows.”If the widow has children or grandchildren, they should first learn to be good to their family and give back to their parents because God likes this. […]
However, if a person neglects his family, especially his own, he has rejected the religion and is worse than a nonbeliever.
ESV 1 Timothy 5:3–8
It is unfortunate that many elderly persons choose euthanasia or assisted suicide because they feel like a burden on their family[2]. This is typical of Western selfishness.
It’s wrong to treat seniors like costs. Be prepared to care for our parents, which is hard. Euthanasia in the UK gives the message that old people and those with long-term health issues are worthless. It promotes giving up on people instead of integrating them into families and society to improve their lives.
We must modify our thinking to become a giving culture. They’d rather serve than be served.
