Watchman’s Daily Devotional: The Trials and Temptations of Life Are Necessary to Help Us Grow in Dependence on the Lord and Faith in His Word

After Jesus began His ministry with His baptism by John, the Spirit of God guided Him into the wilderness to face temptation from the devil. It’s important to remember the cautionary note often seen in car commercials: “Professional driver – closed course. Do not attempt.” Similarly, while God permits trials and temptations to fortify us, we must recognize their purpose. A delicate plant moved abruptly into bright sunlight may wither, while a tree that withstands strong winds develops deep roots to endure ongoing storms. Jesus demonstrated that He would not depend on His own understanding or seek shortcuts to His mission. Instead, He fully relied on the Word of God and the guidance of the Holy Spirit. We, too, must cultivate this same trust in the Father to be effective in God’s kingdom. Our temptations will match our strength (1 […]

Watchman’s Daily Devotional: Jesus Spoke As One Who Had The Authority To Tell A Person Or A Crowd What Was Actually True And What Wasn’t

When Jesus moved to Capernaum, he settled in the house of Peter. Approximately one block away from where we were, the synagogue was located. There is still evidence of the foundation of that particular synagogue in existence today. During the time that Jesus was teaching, the people observed a change. The oral laws were not the focus of his attention, nor were he quoting other rabbis. In this manner, the scribes educated their students. Instead, Jesus would frequently respond by saying, “You have heard it was said…, but I tell you…” in response to the remark. (Matthew 5:21-22, 27-28, 33-34 for the Bible). As he spoke, he gave the impression of someone who was in a position to inform an individual or a group of people what was genuinely true and what was not. The only rabbis who claimed to

Watchman’s Daily Devotional: Life Is Rarely What We Expect. When Life Is Not What We Have Expected and a Sword Pierces Our Hearts, Will We Trust in the One Who Knows All and Has All Power?

Luke 2:34-35 34 And Simeon blessed them and said to Mary his mother, “Behold, this child is appointed for the fall and rising of many in Israel, and for a sign that is opposed 35 (and a sword will pierce through your own soul also), so that thoughts from many hearts may be revealed.” He was in the temple in Jerusalem, waiting to see the Messiah come. It was the Holy Spirit who told Simeon that this baby was the One when Joseph and Mary brought Jesus to them. Simeon spoke like a prophet when he said that Jesus was a light for all the people. It was written 700 years ago and was from the Suffering Servant Songs of Isaiah. It was about the Messiah who would come (Isaiah 42:6; 49:6). Simeon then said that Jesus was going to

Watchman’s Daily Devotional:Luke Begins His Gospel by Telling the Recipient That Many People Had Attempted to Compile a Narrative of What Had Taken Place. He Is Referring to the Life, Death, and Resurrection of Jesus, and the Beginnings of the Church

Luke 1:1-2 1 Inasmuch as many have undertaken to compile a narrative of the things that have been accomplished among us, 2 just as those who from the beginning were eyewitnesses and ministers of the word have delivered them to us . . . At the beginning of his Gospel, Luke tells the reader that many people had tried to write down what had happened. His words are about Jesus’ life, death, and rising, as well as the start of the church. He said that he and the others got their information from people who were there. The best way to find out what really happened is to ask people who were there what they saw. This shows that Luke wrote while the first people who followed Jesus were still alive. In other words, other people could read the work

Watchman’s Daily Devotional: Welcoming a Child Is Akin to Welcoming Jesus and the Father. A Moral Individual Cherishes Children and Embraces Moments Spent with Them

The disciples found themselves in a spirited discussion, contemplating who among them would be granted the most esteemed role in the kingdom that Jesus would establish. Jesus gently reminded them that their perspective was inverted. The highest calling was that of the servant. The life of Jesus beautifully illustrated that profound truth. To emphasize His message, Jesus placed a child among them. He then uttered the sacred words of our verse for today. What message was Jesus imparting to them? Reflect on the other account where parents approached Jesus with their children, only to have the disciples attempt to send them away (Mark 10:14). In the first century, the significance of children was often overlooked in the broader context of society. A significant individual showed little interest in the lives of children. Yet, Jesus was revealing to the disciples that
