The disciples found themselves in a spirited discussion, contemplating who among them would be granted the most esteemed role in the kingdom that Jesus would establish. Jesus gently reminded them that their perspective was inverted. The highest calling was that of the servant. The life of Jesus beautifully illustrated that profound truth. To emphasize His message, Jesus placed a child among them. He then uttered the sacred words of our verse for today.
What message was Jesus imparting to them? Reflect on the other account where parents approached Jesus with their children, only to have the disciples attempt to send them away (Mark 10:14). In the first century, the significance of children was often overlooked in the broader context of society.
A significant individual showed little interest in the lives of children. Yet, Jesus was revealing to the disciples that their understanding of true greatness differed from the divine perspective of greatness. Touching these young hearts with the warmth of divine love was a profound blessing. To embrace a child, crafted by the Creator in His likeness, is to embrace the essence of the Divine. Welcoming a child is akin to embracing the presence of Jesus and the Father. A virtuous individual cherishes the presence of children and embraces moments spent with them.
This profound teaching left a lasting impression on the disciples, prompting them to remember it deeply, and Mark faithfully captured it for the benefit of all who would follow Jesus in the years to come. Do not let the world’s perception of greatness lead you astray. A truly admirable individual leads with humility and inspires others through their actions, rather than demanding service. A truly great person cherishes others and recognizes the possibilities within them. Remarkable individuals understand that the sacrifice of Jesus for humanity bestows upon them an immeasurable worth. They show compassion for those who are often overlooked. That is the essence of true greatness.
Heavenly Father, we ask for Your blessings upon every caregiver and teacher who embodies Your love to those created in Your likeness. Guide us in understanding the worth You place upon each of us.
Mark 9:37
37 “Whoever receives one such child in my name receives me, and whoever receives me, receives not me but him who sent me.”
