Rom.10–CHRIST IS THE END OF THE LAW ON RIGHTEOUSNESS’ BEHALF–VS.4

It’s true. Christ brought an end to the law to make the righteousness that is of faith without works the focal point no one can miss. So it was on behalf of the righteousness that is by faith that Jesus died. In this 10th ch of Romans Paul begins by again letting us know who he is writing this letter to. Saying to his believing Israelite brethren, 10 “Brethren, my heart’s desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.” Just as he told them at the beginning of ch.9. This is his pattern throughout this letter. And in vs.2 he says he sees their zeal for God saying, “For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God.” But, there is a problem. Because Paul says their zeal for God is “not according to knowledge.”…

HOW “WORKS OF GRACE” BECOME THE ENEMY OF SAVING GRACE

In this message I want to talk about what it takes to be saved. And what it takes to stay saved. With a special focus on works vs grace. In Gal.1 we see that salvation by works is anathema to Paul’s gospel. Yet we have still today those who would try to insert works somehow into the Bible’s salvation message. Even though Paul wrote things like “salvation is by grace through faith not of works” in Eph.2. And “to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness” in Rom.4. And “if by grace, then is it no more of works: otherwise grace is no more grace” in Rom.11. Reading these it would seem impossible that anyone could incorporate works into Paul’s message about how men are saved. But, for…

ONLY JEWS CAN EVER BE GUILTY OF TRANSGRESSING THE LAW- ROM.2:14,4:15- so it helps a great deal to know who Paul was writing TO in Romans

Who is Paul writing TO in Romans? Do you think his instructions were for the whole assembly at Rome? Or was it directed at a specific group of people there? Does Paul write TO everyone when he writes to the assembly at Rome? How can we know for sure? To find this out we need to be able to “rightly divide the word of truth” as Paul says in 2 Tim.2:15 we must. So that we do not make the kind of mistakes Peter says in 2 Peter 3:16 those do who wrest Paul’s teachings to their own destruction. So this message is not just about what Paul was teaching in Romans. But, it is also to show to whom it was being taught. WHAT THE DEVIL BELIEVES VS WHAT WE WHO ARE SAVED BELIEVE

Edward O’Hara: Have you ever heard someone respond to the preaching of salvation by grace through faith without works by saying, “Well, the devil believes. So just believing is not enough”? I have. And it’s very frustrating when hearing that from anyone who claims to believe in Jesus. It can attributed to immaturity. But, this kind of response can also mean that they really do not know Jesus. Because this kind of response comes from their belief that only when works accompany faith is anyone saved. Saying in effect that we are saved by works as if James was contradicting what Paul taught. Which also means that if we are not saved it is because of bad works. So salvation becomes an issue of works rather than of grace through faith. A MORE PERFECT WAY- ACTS 18:26–IN THIS WE SEE THAT THE MESSAGE OF CHRIST GIVEN THROUGH JOHN’S BAPTISM WAS INSUFFICIENT

Edward O’Hara: Like Rom.6, Acts 18 tells us there is a difference between John’s baptism and New Covenant baptism. The man Apollos in this passage is said to have been preaching the message of Christ. But, that he was preaching the way of John’s baptism. So that he was in need of being taught “a more perfect way”. In this we see that the message of Christ given through John’s baptism was insufficient. The reason this is true is because John’s baptism was only for those who were under the law. A baptism that shows how to believe in Christ while still living under the law. A way that included the remission of sins they committed while under the law. Just as John, an apostle to the circumcision per Gal.2:9, in 1 John 1:8,9 teaches. The “more perfect way” regards…

Edward O’Hara: Most believe it had something to do with making bad people good enough for God to accept them. That by punishing Jesus in our place God’s wrath was appeased so that we do not have to go to suffer God’s wrath by going to hell. By what they believe was the purpose of Jesus’ death paying the penalty for sin that we could not pay. But, since Jesus came, and Paul was separated as an apostle to the assembly of believers, we know that what the law says it only says to them that were under the law. Did you know that the Bible shows that even when keeping the law you may still be a transgressor of the law? And did you know that virtually all of the churches have fallen into this transgression of the law by “the deceitfulness of sin”? It’s true.
