Psalms 66:10-12 10 For you, O God, tested us; you refined us like silver. 11You brought us into prison and laid burdens on our backs. 12You let men ride over our heads; we went through fire and water, but you brought us to a place of abundance.
Daily struggles do not go away when we choose to follow Christ. Scripture repeatedly shows that God’s people face trials, sometimes to the point of being completely overwhelmed. The Apostle Paul reminds believers that if they suffer alongside Christ, they will also reign with Him (2 Timothy 2:12).
Why does God allow His followers to face such difficulties? It is all about improving ourselves. From God’s perspective, the finished work is already complete, but as we go about our daily lives, old habits and patterns from our past try to resurface. These familiar habits can be tempting to return to, but adversity reveals what needs to change. Life’s challenges, like refining metal with fire, bring impurities to the surface for God to remove. A silversmith knows when his work is finished when he can see his reflection in the silver; God desires to see His own image in us.
Finally, God leads us to a place of abundance, though for many, this fullness may not be realized until the next life. Hebrews 11:39-40 states that those who persevered in faith despite not seeing all of the promises fulfilled on earth will receive an even greater reward in eternity. If you’re struggling, remember that you’re not alone; let the Comforter help you.
Focus on the eternal reward, endure by God’s grace, and believe that He is guiding you to true abundance.
Prayer: Heavenly Father,
Thank You for walking with me through every trial and refining me to reflect Your image. When my old ways resurface or burdens feel heavy, remind me of Your loving presence and purpose in every season. Fill me with strength to endure, grace to grow, and hope for the eternal reward You promise. Help me trust that, in all things, You are guiding me toward true abundance in You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
