Psalms 63:1-3 1O God, you are my God, earnestly I seek you; my soul thirsts for you, my body longs for you, in a dry and weary land where there is no water. 2I have seen you in the sanctuary and beheld your power and your glory. 3Because your love is better than life, my lips will glorify you.
David yearned deeply to be close to God—to dwell in His presence continually. In Psalm 61, he expresses his wish to live in God’s tent forever. In another passage, David likens his longing to intense thirst with no water in sight—a familiar experience for anyone living in the arid hills of Judah, where a dried-up cistern could mean a hard, dusty journey to find relief. What do we pursue in our own lives? What fills us with longing and urgency?
David’s desire for God’s presence grew from his encounters during worship in the sanctuary. At that time, the tabernacle was still in use—a sacred tent representing God’s dwelling. Worship there left such a profound impact on David that being near God became his greatest pursuit. Witnessing God’s power and glory in worship left him captivated. Have you had such a moment that reshaped your desires? You can encounter God in His Word or, just like David, in worship. If you genuinely seek to know God more, He will respond—because that prayer matches His will.
When David encountered God’s glory, he realized that God’s love is better than life itself—a love too great to fully comprehend. Experiencing that love inspires a deeper devotion within us, reflecting the truth that love awakens love in return. David’s response was to praise and glorify God. Similarly, the apostle Paul prayed that believers would know Christ’s love in all its depth, so they could be filled completely with the fullness of God (see Ephesians 3:16-19).
