By SRH The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has subtly acknowledged that individuals who remain unvaccinated against monkeypox may encounter “serious complications,” potentially leading to “death,” if they come into “close contact” with vaccinated individuals. On August 29, the FDA granted approval for the monkeypox vaccine (ACAM2000) for use among American citizens. This vaccine, however, has existed for several years, initially developed to combat smallpox. It received its first approval from the FDA in 2007 but was reauthorized for monkeypox use just last month. Yet, this vaccine is not without its dangers, as it carries the risk of severe side effects, including death. Worryingly, these risks extend beyond those who receive the vaccine; unvaccinated individuals who have “physical contact” with vaccinated persons may also experience adverse effects.
