The Daily Mail reported on Thursday that so-called health “experts” say holiday parties have led to more cases of four different types of viral infections. As a result, some states brought back mask laws. The “quad-demic” is made up of a rise in infections caused by the flu, COVID-19, RSV (a respiratory disease), and norovirus (also known as the “stomach flu”). News stories about the quadruple danger came out just a few weeks before Donald Trump becomes president. This was right after stories about the risk of bird flu didn’t go over well.
According to WLUK, visitors to Aurora Health Care in Wisconsin will have to wear masks starting January 6 when they come into touch with patients or are in areas where people gather, such as patient rooms and other areas marked by signs. Several California counties, including Alameda, Contra Costa, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara, as well as the city of Berkeley, made mask laws that went into effect in November and will last until March 31, 2025.
CBS News reported that the order only applies to medical workers in some counties, but to tourists or residents in stricter counties as well. Several hospitals in Illinois, Indiana, and New Jersey have also made masks mandatory, even though they didn’t work to stop infections during the COVID-19 pandemic. This was done to protect people from the expected winter surge of diseases, according to different news sources.
In New York, Gov. Kathy Hochul and New York City Mayor Eric Adams are said to have asked people to wear face masks on public transportation, as reported by NBC 4 New York in June. “Expert” in viral diseases Dr. Joe Bresee, who has worked for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for 20 years, told the Daily Mail, “What we are seeing now is an increase in respiratory disease and norovirus that is really all over the U.S.”
People on social media were not sure about mask laws that were put in place because of what some called the “quad-demic.” Some X users asked if the reports were “more fear-mongering,” and others warned as early as December 2024 that the move to go back to COVID-19 would be seen as “utter deception and evil.” @NoNonsense2 on X pointed out that the “quad-demic” started to get worse just a few weeks before Trump’s second term.
