The sacred assembly of Israel was made up of seventy wise men along with the high priest. They were the ones who brought about the arrest of Jesus and stood in judgment over Him. These were the most revered individuals among the people of Israel. Only the chief priest held a position of greater significance. Among the council, Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus stand out as the sole individuals who embraced their faith in Jesus (John 19:39).
Today’s passage reveals the strength of Joseph as he bravely approached Pilate to request the body. While one might assume that conversing with Pilate was a daunting experience, I believe that is not the essence of what is being conveyed. Joseph and Nicodemus stood courageously against the entire council. The moment Joseph took the body of Jesus down from the cross and laid Him to rest in his own tomb was a profound testament to his commitment as a devoted follower of Christ. He would face the loss of his esteemed position and authority, becoming an outcast among the revered circles of Jerusalem. He chose to stand alongside the fishermen and a former tax-collector, who were seeking refuge behind a locked door. He would even be sacrificing his participation in the Feast of Unleavened Bread, as he was destined to touch the lifeless body of Jesus (Numbers 9:6).
It is truly remarkable how the same occurrences unfold in our lives even now. There are individuals from various faiths who experience rejection from their families and communities upon embracing Jesus as their Savior. All connections with them are severed, and their enterprises face widespread rejection. Yet, akin to Joseph and Nicodemus, the honor of bearing the reproach of Christ surpasses all worldly treasures. It is a difficult choice, yet upon encountering Jesus, a decision must be made.
Reflect on this: While our choice to follow Jesus may not lead to dramatic transformations, it will undoubtedly bring about change in our lives. Companions may part ways. The bonds with family members will be transformed eternally. Let us seek the strength that Joseph exemplified in boldly embracing our identity as followers of Christ.
