Watchman’s Warning: Without a Doubt, the Most Pervasive Idol in Modern Western Culture Is the New “Magic” of Medicine ”And It Will Kill

New beliefs have supplanted those icons. Medicine—the new “magic”—is western culture's biggest idol.

Modern medicine has a short history, and a body of licensed “physicians” was created in the 1800s during the vaccine movement in Europe, when health officials wanted more control over the population and threatening diseases like smallpox.

Most of life's issues are solved by medication today. There are pills or vaccines for almost every ailment, and billions of dollars are spent on research to find a cure.

The prevalent belief is that physical science and medicine can fix all issues.

Medical system administrators are trained, licensed, and given immense power over our lives. They can take children from their parents, declare someone “insane” and commit them to an institution, force people (especially children) to use their products through vaccinations, and make broad laws and regulations that affect everyone.

Medicine's power in our culture is justified by the assumption that life depends on it.

Drugs as Witchcraft or Sorcery

An intriguing Greek word often rendered as “witchcraft” or “sorcery” in English Bible translations is pharmakeia, which is the source of English words like “pharmacy” and “pharmaceutical.”

Besides the Bible, this Greek word is usually translated as “medicine” or “drugs.”

Galatians 5:20 uses it.

Sinful deeds include sexual immorality, impurity, and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft; anger, strife, jealousy, fits of fury, selfish ambition, dissensions, factions, and envy; intoxication, orgies, and others. As previously, I tell you that such people will not inherit the kingdom of God. (5:19-21)

Could you imagine replacing “witchcraft” in the lyrics above with “medicines”? The modern English Bible translators couldn't, but the ancients would have used that word for “medicine.”

A few places in Revelation utilize it:

The rest of humanity that survived these plagues continued to worship demons and idols of gold, silver, bronze, stone, and wood—idols that could not see, hear, or walk. They did not repent of murder, magic, sexual immorality, or robbery. Revelation 9:20-21

In this verse, pharmakeia means “magic arts.” Babylon is mentioned below:

Lamplight will never beam on you again. The bridegroom and bride's voices will never return. Your merchants were world-class. Your magic spell misled all nations. (Revelation 18:23)

Here, pharmakeia means “magic spell.” Due to our contemporary understanding of “medicine,” the translators did not think “medicine” fit these verses.

She spent all her money and suffered under several doctors, but she got worse. (Mark 5:26)

Do doctors heal? To comprehend what doctors restore, we must define “health” and “doctor.” The biblical ancients defined “health” differently. Health for believers was a proper grasp of truth and a restored relationship with God, which Jesus' life, death, and resurrection supplied.

Based on the biblical definition of health, modern doctors who practice medicine are not healers who help people connect with God and experience a restored relationship through Jesus Christ.

The pharmaceutical sector now rules spiritual leaders' territory.
