Watchman Daily Devotional: Is There Something in Your Life That Is Pulling Your Heart Away From the Lord? Are You Always Monitoring Your Heart? Staying Sensitive to the Holy Spirit Results in Conviction and a Determination to Cut Off Anything That Pulls Us Away From Him

Chapter 11, verse 9 of a certain ancient text The Lord was displeased with Solomon, as his heart had strayed from the God of Israel, who had appeared to him on two occasions.

Solomon had a large number of wives and concubines from different backgrounds. As warned, their hearts were led astray towards other gods. He also constructed places of worship for the deities of their respective nations. The persistence of these elevated locations in Jerusalem throughout the rule of numerous monarchs ultimately contributed to the nation’s downfall. Despite his continued adherence to Jewish rituals and sacrifices, his devotion to the LORD had waned. Following his passing, the nation would experience a deep division.

How is it possible for someone’s heart to stray, despite experiencing abundant blessings from above? Despite having two encounters with a divine presence, his heart remained unswayed! Our understanding of the divine is shaped by our knowledge, and Solomon’s wisdom led him to recognize the unparalleled greatness of the LORD. His heartfelt prayer for the Temple demonstrates his deep commitment to his beliefs.

David had shown Solomon how to carry on in the ways of the Lord. David expressed remorse when he was found guilty. Solomon’s heart became filled with pride. He stubbornly resisted humbling himself when the prophet delivered God’s edict. It was Solomon who penned the wise words: “Guard your heart with utmost care, for it is the source of life’s blessings” (Proverbs 4:23). Despite his shortcomings, he was unable to maintain a humble heart and remain receptive to God’s instructions.

  1. What a blessing this message is.
Before Jesus came all men were only natural, not spiritual. This is why many had difficulty remaining faithful to God. Even after having direct experiences with Him. It was the same for Peter when he denied Jesus 3 times. But, after he became spiritual by the new birth he preached Jesus in the face of possible imprisonment, torture, and death. It’s the power of the spirit in us that makes all the difference.
