17 However, they disregarded the advice of their judges and  Whored themselves before other gods. They quickly strayed from the path taken by their fathers, who had walked in obedience to the LORD's commands, but they chose not to do so.

The following generation turned to idols after Joshua and the elders of his generation passed away because they were blind to everything that God had done for them. God appointed leaders to be judges. These men and women were well-respected for their wisdom and discernment. They arbitrated conflicts between individuals and led the troops into combat.

God speaks of their transgressions as instructional, or as "whored." They made a vow to love God above all else. The country looked up to him like a husband. If they followed His excellent laws, He would take care of them and protect them. Being disloyal to God is equivalent to adultery and having lust for another person. Joshua forewarned the people about God's jealousy for this reason.

The Israelites would not listen to the judges, even though God showed them kindness by sending anointed judges to temporarily deliver them from their attackers. This issue of disobedience to God will recur throughout the history of the country. The prophets would repeatedly warn them that their failure to heed was the root of their defeat.

This was written to provide us guidance. What is the desire of your heart? Do you believe that something other than God will satisfy your soul? Are you faithful in your love relationship with God, paying attention to what He says, and following His instructions?

Pray: Lord, I am surrounded by temptations. I have no doubt that you are the one real source of contentment that lasts forever. Please help me to perceive infidelity the way you do. Grow my love for you and support my constant compliance and listening.

The Watchman

In the Bible, the Watchman is responsible for keeping watch and warning others of potential danger or impending judgment. The role is mentioned several times in the Old Testament, particularly in the book of Ezekiel. In Ezekiel 33:6, God says to the prophet Ezekiel, "But if the watchman sees the sword coming and does not blow the trumpet, so that the people are not warned, and the sword comes and takes any one of them, that person is taken away in his iniquity, but his blood I will require at the watchman's hand."
