According to CNBC, this call to action came during Alphabet's "all-hands" meeting of 170,000-plus full-time employees on Wednesday, when Pichai announced "Simplicity Sprint," an initiative to "remove speed bumps," "eliminate waste," and develop products at a faster pace, based on an internal survey seen by the news outlet.

"It is evident that we are facing a hard macro climate with more uncertainty ahead," Pichai warned staff, urging them to participate in a poll by Aug. 15. "There are legitimate worries that our overall productivity is not where it needs to be given the numbers we have." According to The Verge, Pichai's remarks follow a message last month warning that Google isn't "immune to economic challenges," as well as another email announcing a two-week recruiting halt "to examine our workforce requirements." That latter statement coincided with Pichai's comments on Wednesday, when he emphasized "consolidating where investments overlap and simplifying procedures," which some saw as a signal that layoffs were on the way.

Fiona Cicconi, Google's human resources chief, addressed the concern, saying there were no plans to reduce the workforce at the moment—in fact, she said hiring was still happening for "critical roles," even though the hiring pace would slow overall into 2023—but she also didn't guarantee layoffs wouldn't occur. "We're expecting teams to be more focused and efficient, and we're figuring out what that means for us as a business," she told CNBC. According to Fortune, Google isn't the only tech company making similar moves: Microsoft has announced employment cuts, and Meta, Facebook's parent company, has also reduced recruiting.
