Four towns in Massachusetts—Douglas, Oxford, Sutton, and Webster—have implemented a voluntary evening lockdown to help prevent the spread of a dangerous mosquito-borne illness. This action follows the Massachusetts Department of Public Health’s confirmation of the first human case of Eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) in Worcester County since 2020. On Wednesday, the Oxford Board of Health approved a recommendation urging residents to stay indoors after 6:00 p.m., effective immediately, until September 30, as stated in a public health advisory shared with Fox News Digital. Beginning October 1, the guidance will shift to staying indoors after 5:00 p.m. until the arrival of the first hard frost.
This reality has largely faded from historical memory, especially since the onset of COVID led to a complete overhaul of disease control protocols. The very definition of “vaccine” was altered to accommodate mRNA injections. However, implementing widespread lockdowns during a pandemic has never been a conventional practice in history, particularly for a virus that has existed for centuries, with infections appearing annually in only a small number of individuals and lacking human-to-human transmission.
