Psalms 42:1-3 1As the deer pants for streams of water, so my soul pants for you, O God. 2My soul thirsts for God, for the living God. When can I go and meet with God? 3My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?”
The first verse’s lyrics become a well-known church chant. In the song, it expresses a yearning to know God more personally, yet in the psalm, it is a plea for escape from the psalmist’s position. It reminds me of Job’s request to make his case before God. We do not know what is causing David’s anguish. It could have been when he fled from Saul, Absalom, or because to illness. There are dark valleys through which God leads us that heighten our yearning for Him. Nobody wants to go down them, but oh, the maturation of our spirit that comes from the sorrow. We seek for God’s presence to be our refuge from the trials of life, but He occasionally withholds it from us.
The black nite of the soul returns us from our apathetic state to the heights of existence in God. Pain propels us beyond our complacency and toward new heights of closeness. The brokenhearted reader will easily relate to these lines. Those who have not yet traveled down this path, remember this: do not harden your heart in this location. If you do, you’ll come out bitter rather than better. The enemy of your soul will have achieved a twofold victory. He caused the agony, and it would have the effects he sought. Instead, defeat him by making yourself even more vulnerable and allowing your heart to break. The LORD is near the brokenhearted. It is a location where you put your complete trust in God’s faithfulness, even while you cannot see any evidence. Those with whom you have shared Christ and who are aware of your Christian faith will insult you, asking, “Where is your God?” He promised to be nearby.
Remember: Weeping will last for a while, but joy will return. You will come away with a stronger desire for God and intimacy with Him.
Pray: Lord, In my daily struggles, give me strength and patience. Help me trust You with my worries and find hope in Your presence.
Guide me through each challenge, and fill my heart with peace today. Amen.
