Watchman: Journalists in the United States Are Supposed To Be Protected, but Julian Assange Will Be Punished for Daring To Challenge the Powerful.

John Joseph Mearsheimer recently emphasized the importance of freeing Julian Assange by stating, “Journalists are not imprisoned for releasing classified information in the United States.” Mr. Mearsheimer, a political scientist at the University of Chicago, made this statement in a recent video.

There has been extensive coverage on Mr. Assange, with his legal team making a last-minute effort on Feb. 20 to prevent his extradition to the United States. Since 2019, the WikiLeaks founder has been detained in Belmarsh Prison in Britain and is facing 17 charges of espionage along with a single charge of computer misuse.

One of the documents published by WikiLeaks, titled “Collateral Murder,” revealed video footage of a U.S. military airstrike in Baghdad on July 12, 2007. The classified footage depicted an Apache helicopter firing a 30 mm cannon at a group of individuals, including two Reuters journalists. The attack resulted in the death of around a dozen people and left two children injured.

My confidence in Assange far surpasses that in the US government. Just observe their treatment of the Jan 6th protestors. If the government is targeting you, their intentions are not honorable or pure.

State secrets disclosure is a serious issue, but as Mr. Mearsheimer highlights, it has a long legal history. In 1971, the New York Times released classified documents known as the Pentagon Papers, revealing government deception about the Vietnam War, leading to the New York Times Co. v. United States case.

This case, familiar to many college students, involves an insider leaking state secrets to a journalist, similar to the Assange situation. Daniel Ellsberg, a military analyst, leaked the study to the media, causing Nixon’s administration embarrassment. The charges against Ellsberg were eventually dropped, emphasizing that the New York Times, not the journalist, was not charged.

According to Mr. Mearsheimer, Assange is not like Ellsberg, who broke the law by sharing state secrets. Assange is more akin to the New York Times, which published the information. Manning was punished for leaking classified material, but Assange, as a journalist, did not break the law, as it is common for journalists to do so.
