Watchman’s Update: Another Proxy Civil War Supported by the United States Is Weighing Down on Syria, with Sunni Jihadists, Israel, and the United States on One Side and Russia, Iran, Assad, and Shiite Jihadists on the Other

Update March 7,2025

On Thursday, clashes between followers of the ousted Bashar al-Assad government and the country’s new extreme Islamist administration killed 48 people, destroying any remaining hope that Syria could overcome its status as a victim of the Western-imposed regime change and usher in an era of tranquility and stability. A significant minority group is pleading with Russia to intervene on their behalf as they fear for their lives in the face of rising sectarian violence and the impending outbreak of civil war.

Pro-Assad forces attacked and killed 16 regime security forces in the town of Jableh, which is located in Syria’s coastal Latakia region. A total of 28 pro-Assad militants and 4 civilians were killed in the subsequent reprisal, as reported by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights (SOHR) in London. The Assad family is the most prominent Alawite, a minority sect of Islam mostly located in Syria; the region of Latakia has the biggest population of Alawites. About 10% of the people living there are Alawites. The Khmeimim air base, which is operated by Russia, is also located in the province. Regime forces were ambushed in rural Latakia, where they had gone on an operation to capture an official from Assad’s ministry.
The coastal region of Latakia in Syria, home to the largest concentration of Alawites, was the site of Thursday’s fighting.

An official from Latakia’s security detail said the ambush was flawless. “[In] a well-planned and premeditated attack, several groups of Assad militia remnants attacked our positions and checkpoints, targeting many of our patrols in the Jableh area,” Mustafa Kneifati described the incident to the German news site DW. Whether or not former Syrian army General Suheil al-Hassan was actually a combatant is unclear, although rumors have it that he was among the pro-Assad forces. Regime security forces used artillery and helicopter gunships to counter the ambush, and the conflict continued for hours.

Rumor has it that huge convoys of government forces are making their way toward the Syrian coastal region, suggesting that Thursday’s violence was only the beginning of far more dramatic events.

In addition to the fighting, sectarian violence is on the rise, with Sunni militants targeting Alawites. The Alawites had lived in relative tranquility under the Alawite Assad family’s leadership from 1971 until President Bashar al Assad’s ouster in December 2024, when Sunni extremists seized power. Citizens claim that security personnel have carried out executions, abductions, and house seizures, despite the new government’s repeated warnings against sectarian reprisals against Alawites.

Supposed footage of the atrocities committed against the Alawites has gone viral on social media. Supposedly showing dozens of bodies of Alawites in a heap is one graphic video; another purports to show Sunnis firing at Alawite homes in Homs province:

According to another, an Alawite’s corpse is being pulled behind an SUV.

The Alawites’ bodies are being dragged behind cars in Latakia by HTS. Totally terrifying. Picture:
The following was tweeted by Lindsey Snell on March 6, 2022:

The video allegedly shows citizens who are “armed by the Syrian government” posing a threat to communities in Alawite territory who were loyal to the regime of the ousted Assad:

Along with the Alawite ambush, protests against the new Sunni rule broke out in many locations, such as Tartous and Latakia City, with people demanding the withdrawal of regime forces from the area. RT in Russia states that the Alawite community is pleading with Russia, the UN, and the rest of the international community to spare them from assaults by regime forces and their allies. They claim that the regime’s forces have invaded the coastal region “under the pretext of pursuing remnants of the [Assad] regime — while in reality, aiming to terrorize and kill the Syrian people in general and the Alawite community in particular.”

Even more importantly, RT stated that “civil war is now official,” citing a public proclamation that forms a new “Military Council for the Liberation of Syria.” The group aims to accomplish:

“Liberating all Syrian terrirtory from all occupying and terrorist forces”
“Rebuilding strong institutions on national and democratic foundations”
“Protecting the lives and property of Syrian citizens”

“We call on all Syrians, from different sects, regions and ethnicities, to join our ranks and stand with us in this historical stage,” the group released a statement.

There are plenty of smiles in Tel Aviv and Jerusalem as the violence and mayhem escalate in Syria, as far as the Israeli leadership is concerned.

A foretelling exists that describes a time when the city of Damascus will be laid to waste…

The situation in Syria stands as a recent example of foreign intervention, and the timing raises significant questions…

The current administration has set in motion yet another conflict for the incoming leader to confront upon taking office next month.

The hidden powers within the U.S. are engaged in a covert conflict in Syria, seemingly aimed at exacerbating turmoil in the Middle East and igniting a new chapter in global strife.

The situation in Syria is unraveling, burdened by the forces of a foreign-backed internal conflict, where one faction is supported by Western powers and their allies, while the opposing side finds strength in a coalition of Eastern nations and their affiliates.

Al Nusra, formed by factions of Al-Qaida and ISIS, is seizing control of the nation with assistance from Turkey, a partner of the United States and a significant player in the NATO military coalition. The city of Aleppo and numerous smaller towns and villages have fallen into the hands of those who oppose the established order.

M. Dowling at The Independent Sentinel observes that “Jake Sullivan has indicated that Al-Qaida is aligned with us in Syria.”

Jake Sullivan serves as the national security adviser to Biden and plays a pivotal role, alongside Secretary of State Antony Blinken, within a certain influential group that is fixated on a singular agenda regarding Russia. They are all part of a powerful alliance that influences global affairs and decision-making.

Dowling observes that the conflict in Syria began in 2011 following a rebellion against the governance of President Bashar Assad. The presence of military forces from the U.S., Russia, Israel, and Iran in Syria signifies a convergence of powerful nations in a land steeped in historical significance. The struggle for power continues as factions against Assad, supported by U.S. allies, hold sway over a significant portion of the land, while a formidable counter-offensive has been initiated by Russia and Iran. Russia harbors deep discontent towards Turkey for its role in inciting the upheaval against Assad, seemingly with the covert support of external forces.

The misleading story being presented by the mainstream media suggests that a disorganized group of purportedly “heroic fighters” has spontaneously arisen to liberate Syria from the tyrant Assad. No, what we have here are factions of believers engaged in a struggle, with one side receiving support from Western powers while the other is bolstered by Eastern influences.

As Dowling emphasizes, “All jihadists are malevolent individuals.” They are wicked, for as soon as they ascend to power, one of their initial acts is to violate the women of faith and put to death the men who uphold their beliefs. It unfolded in Iraq following the fall of Saddam Hussein, and it is currently occurring in Syria.

For years, there has been financial support directed towards militant factions in Syria. The prominent figures of the military-industrial complex, Senators Lindsey Graham and John McCain, took the lead in this endeavor.

Dowling references Joe Kent, a former chief warrant officer in the U.S. Army special forces, who expresses that the nation finds itself trapped in a perpetual cycle of conflict, engaged in a transformative struggle in Syria that has been instigated by the U.S.

The current state of affairs is tumultuous, and it seems that those in power are exacerbating the situation, perhaps preparing to pass the tumultuous burden to a future leader, who may rise to prominence amidst the turmoil.

“It is imperative that we withdraw from Syria.” We are failing to assist anyone, especially not our fellow citizens. This is yet another sign of the impending conflict in the world stage.

The situation in the Eastern European nation of Georgia is heating up, as demonstrators remain steadfast in their presence on the streets, influenced by external forces. The actions of the U.S. have contributed to the tragic loss of over half a million lives in Ukraine.

It is imperative that we withdraw from any nation where our presence does not serve a clear and compelling purpose for the security of our nation. Restrict the agency’s operations to the realm of intelligence collection, ceasing any involvement in the instigation of uprisings and regime changes. Bring our troops back home and restore the true essence of protection to our national defense apparatus. Source
