He claims they chose to honor the drag queens in response to what he describes as “hateful rhetoric.

Texas Christian University Offers Drag Course
The spring 2023 semester at Texas Christian University’s “Queer Art of Drag” course required students to develop “drag personas” and perform for the class.Dr. Nino Testa, better known by his drag name “Maria Von Clapp,” taught the course through the university’s Women and Gender Studies program.While “drag has also been deployed in service of violent ideologies and can sometimes participate in harmful normative logics,” the website for the class notes that “drag is an art form with a rich history of challenging dominant norms and systems of oppression; building queer community; and cultivating experiences of queer joy in a hostile world.”
Using drag performance as a platform for social critique, pedagogy, and queer world-making is the focus of “critical drag.”The course required students to develop a drag persona through the creation of a “drag vision board,” bibliography, worksheet, in-class lip-sync performance, storyboard, and final performance.A “drag vision board” had two parts: “a series of brainstorming questions to help [students] begin to do the critical self-reflection necessary to develop a drag persona for this class” and “a collage of images, ideas, and quotes to help [students] visualize [their] inspirations for both [their] persona and [their] performance.
“Students were tasked with compiling an annotated bibliography that included “8-10 articles about the people, performers, aesthetics, movements, politics, ideas, or communities that inspire [their] persona.”Students were given a “My Drag Worksheet,” in which they were instructed to “name and describe their drag persona,” create a “drag greeting” and “lip-sync portfolio,” and “strike a pose.”A one-minute “in-class lip-sync performance” was also required of the students. Makeup was encouraged but not required, and students were urged to concentrate on “choreography, movement, gestures, poses, style, facial expressions, and accuracy of the sync.
“The “storyboard” was a useful tool for students to use when conceptualizing and organizing their performance. To what end will you build suspense and a story? How will your choice of style and genre affect the audience’s reception of your performance? In order to put on your performance, what resources do you need to acquire?The course culminated with a final paper and presentation delivered in character, as well as an edited video performance shown at the school’s “Annual Night of Drag.”If you wanted an A or A-minus in the class, you had to perform in a “live group number on the night of the Spectrum Drag Show,” choreographed by “Drag Aunty De’ja DuBois.”
