COVID-19 Outbreak Among Fully Vaccinated Cruise Crew Ends New Year’s Trip in Portugal
By Jack Phillips January 2, 2022 Updated: January 2, 2022A cruise ship is stuck in Lisbon, Portugal, amid a COVID-19 outbreak among fully vaccinated crew members, officials said Sunday.
The AIDAnova, with 2,844 passengers and 1,353 crew onboard, docked in Portugal on Dec. 29 while en route to Madera for New Year’s celebrations, officials said. But the ship was unable to continue pressing forward after 52 COVID-19 cases were detected among the fully vaccinated staff, authorities said.
The company told German news agency Deutsche Presse-Agentur, or DPA, that all passengers aged 12 and older are fully vaccinated and have to take an antigen and a polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test before departing.
“The company’s protocol was immediately actioned, with those infected, who are asymptomatic or displaying light symptoms, immediately isolated on the ship … and the company decided to end the cruise and disembark the passengers,” Lisbon port official Diogo Vieira Branco was quoted by Reuters as saying.
AIDA Cruises, the German operator of the ship, couldn’t be reached for comment on Sunday. AIDA Cruises told DPA that it was trying to find new crew members.
It’s not clear when the AIDAnova would depart to the Canary Islands or when the fresh cruise staff will arrive.
Everyone on board had passed a COVID-19 screening test and were vaccinated with two doses before the ship sailed out of Germany, officials told The Associated Press. They told the AP that no passengers on board the vessel tested positive for the virus.
Reuters footage showed passengers still enjoying the afternoon sun on decks with their drinks, and local media said the disembarking would begin after 6 a.m. on Monday. The crew who had tested positive between Wednesday and Friday were transferred to Lisbon hotels and were in isolation there.
On Thursday, the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) advised people to avoid traveling on cruise ships regardless of their vaccination status.
“Avoid cruise travel, regardless of vaccination status,” the CDC alert says. “Even fully vaccinated travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants … the virus that causes COVID-19 spreads easily between people in close quarters on board ships, and the chance of getting COVID-19 on cruise ships is very high, even if you are fully vaccinated and have received a COVID-19 vaccine booster dose.”
It came after several cruise ships, including ones operated by Royal Caribbean and Carnival, were forced to divert their trips due to COVID-19 outbreaks. The cruise lines require all staff and guests who are eligible for vaccines to show proof of vaccination before entering.
The CDC, meanwhile, is monitoring dozens of cruise ships after COVID-19 cases were detected on board in recent days.
COVID-19 is the illness caused by the CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus.

This month, the second Royal Caribbean cruise ship to leave South Florida and the third to leave the US has reported COVID-19 infections among crew members and passengers.
According to Miami Herald, at least 55 fully vaccinated crew members and passengers on Royal Caribbean’s Odyssey of the Seas tested positive for COVID on Wednesday. Last Saturday, the cruise ship departed from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and has since been denied entry to Curacao and Aruba.
Despite every cruise line requiring passengers and crew to be fully vaccinated before boarding, a cruise ship returning from a sail across the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea with thousands of passengers onboard detected an outbreak of COVID-19, according to AP News.
Norwegian Breakaway, owned by Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings Ltd, departed from the Port of New Orleans on Nov. 28 and sailed to Belize, Honduras, and Mexico, with more than 3,000 people on board.
Ahead of returning to its homeport in New Orleans, the cruise line detected ten COVID infections among its guest and crew. Those who were infected were fully vaccinated and were forced into quarantine.
Governor John Bel Edwards, the City of New Orleans, and the Port of New Orleans were notified about the incident and contacted the CDC. The infected passengers and crew will either travel directly to their homes or self-isolate at an undisclosed location.
According to the vessel-tracking website CruiseMapper, Norwegian Breakaway docked in New Orleans early Sunday morning. All passengers and crew will be subjected to a COVID test before exiting the ship.
Despite a 100% vaccination rate on the vessel, there was still an outbreak of COVID, suggesting that vaccine effectiveness is severely waning.
A recent study of the three primary COVID vaccines showed a ‘dramatic‘ drop in efficacy over six months. So as cruise ship operators begin hitting the high seas with only fully vaxxed passengers and crews that have waning defenses against the virus, one would suspect additional outbreaks on ships as new infections surge across the US.
Even in Europe, where vaccine passport schemes and high vaccination rates are highly enforced, countries are experiencing a surge in infections.
So what are cruise ship operators going to do now? Only allow passengers and crew who are not just fully vaccinated but have their booster shots?
