Watchman Daily Devotional: Jesus Warned the Sadducees They Didn’t Know Scripture or God’s Power, Reminds me of GOP Speaker Johnson

Matthew 22:30

30 For in the resurrection they neither marry nor are given in marriage, but are like angels in heaven.

The Israel of Jesus’ day had two main groupings. The Pharisees believed Moses, the prophets, and heaven. The Sadducees solely believed in Moses’ writings and not angels or an afterlife. Jesus believed like the Pharisees, therefore the Sadducees sought to trip Him up with their greatest argument. Whose wife would a lady be in the resurrection if her husband died and she married his brother, who died, and so on until all seven brothers had married her?

Jesus warned the Sadducees they didn’t know Scripture or God’s power. Jesus said neither humans nor angels will marry in heaven. God can modify our bodies such that intercourse is no longer a function. The marriage connection symbolizes our relationship with God (Ephesians 5:32). The picture will be unnecessary when we are with Him. Sexual closeness is great, but paradise will have even better and endless relationships. We will devote ourselves to God and enjoy pure contact with one other.

Exodus 3:6 proved Jesus’ resurrection from the Torah. There, God said He is Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob’s God. Moses heard that from God, indicating their survival. Jesus didn’t chastise the Sadducees and disregard them; he showed them their wrong from Scripture they believed.

Consider: Marriage is great, but our relationship with God will be better after death.
