Watchman’s Daily Devotional: An Expert In The Mosaicl Laws Tested Jesus By Asking Him What One Must Do To Have Eternal Life. Jesus Put It Back On The Man By Asking Him What He Thought Was Necessary

A scholar of the Mosaic laws challenged Jesus with a question about the path to eternal life. Jesus turned the question back to the man, inviting him to reflect on what he believed was truly needed. The individual expressed that it is essential to love both God and your neighbor. With a nod of affirmation, Jesus encouraged him to proceed and fulfill his task. The man understood that the call to love one’s neighbor could be more challenging than it appeared, so he sought clarity on what “neighbor” truly meant. That could help focus our efforts, making it simpler to put the command into action.

In a profound narrative, Jesus shared the tale of a man who fell victim to violence and theft. Two individuals of faith passed by, one following the other, each choosing to overlook the man in need. At that moment, a Samaritan appeared on the scene. The Jews held a deep disdain for the Samaritans. Yet this Samaritan showed great compassion for the man, tending to his wounds, placing him on his donkey, bringing him to an inn, and assuring that he would return to cover any costs.

Jesus inquired about which of the men who passed by truly acted as a neighbor to the one who had been robbed. In today’s verse, it’s interesting to observe that the scholar of the Scriptures refrained from uttering the word “Samaritan.” He simply stated, “The one who demonstrated compassion.” Jesus expanded the understanding of who qualifies as a “neighbor.” He broadened it!

What steps can we take to extend this kind of compassion to those around us? It becomes achievable when our hearts are overflowing with divine love. When we place our love for God at the forefront, our hearts naturally extend that love to those created in His likeness, the very ones He sought to save. The Samaritan demonstrated a profound willingness to bear any expense in order to tend to the needs of a man from a race that held disdain for his own. Jesus was revealing the impartial essence of the kingdom of God, while also highlighting the risk of allowing religion to take the place of true transformation.

Reflect on this: How much am I prepared to give when I encounter someone who is in need? Have I embraced a faith, or have I truly undergone a transformation of the heart?
