Psalms 141:3-5 3Set a guard over my mouth, O LORD; keep watch over the door of my lips. 4Let not my heart be drawn to what is evil, to take part in wicked deeds with men who are evildoers; let me not eat of their delicacies. 5Let a righteous man strike me-it is a kindness; let him rebuke me-it is oil on my head. My head will not refuse it. Yet my prayer is ever against the deeds of evildoers…
This could be our daily prayer: Our words often lead us into sin, echoing the evil in our hearts. As Scripture says, “Out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” When we hear others gossiping or criticizing someone who’s wronged us or simply disagrees with us, it’s tempting to join in. Yet James teaches that if we can control our tongues, we can control our entire bodies. We desperately need the Holy Spirit to guard our mouths—sealing our lips unless we’re speaking words that build up and encourage (Ephesians 4:29). In a world full of negativity and slander, let’s strive to become voices of encouragement and praise.
David asked God to keep his heart from evil, especially after learning from his own failings. It’s sobering to realize how quickly our hearts are lured toward wrongdoing—often by enticing lies that cost more than we can imagine. Echoing the Lord’s Prayer, we ask, “Lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.”
We also need faithful friends who will lovingly correct us when our words or desires stray. True friends are willing to risk offense to speak the truth; may we receive their correction as a blessing, not an insult.
