In a "targeted" assault on the justice system, a retired Wisconsin judge was shot and murdered on Friday at his home.

Reports indicate that former Juneau County Circuit Judge John Roemer was the victim of the murder that occurred in New Lisbon at approximately 6:30 a.m. on June 3. The 68-year-old man was discovered in a house belonging to a retired county judge, according to a neighbor and public records.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul said during a press conference on Friday that a second individual, a 56-year-old man subsequently identified as the suspect, was located in the basement of the house with a gunshot wound that seemed to have been self-inflicted. He also claimed that a firearm had been discovered on the site.

The victim was spotted by police and rushed to the hospital in severe condition after they immediately began attempting to save his life.

According to Kaul, who declined to identify the victim or the gunman, the shooter had targeted people who were "part of the legal system" and had further targets in mind. They were not named by the attorney general.

"This looks to be a targeted attack..." It indicates that the assailant had other targets in mind. According to Kaul, "It looks to be tied to the judiciary."

As of right now, we don't know whether there are any current threats to other persons," he added, adding that if the inquiry uncovers new threats against other individuals, officials would contact those people.

Officials, according to Kaul, are "restricted in what information we can share" since the investigation is still ongoing.

State Senator Howard Marklein (R-Spring Green), who represents Juneau County, confirmed the judge's death in a message to the Wisconsin State Journal.

On Friday morning, the Juneau County Sheriff's Office got a call reporting that two shots had been fired at a residence in New Lisbon. When the shooter stormed into their house, the caller ran to another neighboring residence and dialed the emergency number.

A neighbor, Donna Voss, told the AP that she was warned by police to remain inside her house on Friday morning. She claimed to have overheard officers ordering the guy to surrender and leave the house over a loudspeaker.

Law enforcement authorities outside the house attempted to communicate with the shooter, but when they failed to make contact, a special tactics and response team entered the premises and discovered a dead homeowner and another guy in the basement.

It was a shock for Voss, who lives approximately 80 miles northwest of Madison in a peaceful area surrounded by farmers and forested acres.
