Natural Immunity to COVID-19 Detected at 20 Months After Infection.

Researchers discovered protection against COVID-19 among the recovered at 20 months after infection, adding to the growing body of data that such protection, known as natural immunity, is long-lasting.

Antibodies to the SARS-CoV-2 spike protein receptor-binding domain (RBD) were discovered in 99 percent of study subjects who tested positive for COVID-19, with some having been sick for as long as 20 months.

In the fall of 2021, the researchers, lead by Dr. Dorry Segev, director of Johns Hopkins University’s Epidemiology Research Group in Organ Transplantation, issued a call for unvaccinated, healthy people and separated them into three groups. The first group included 295 people who had previously tested positive for COVID-19; the second included 275 people who thought they had recovered from COVID-19 but didn’t get tested; and the third included 246 people who didn’t think they had COVID-19 but had never tested positive.

All but two of the participants in the first group tested positive for antibodies, and there was no evidence that the level of protection reduced with time.

Anti-RBD antibodies were found in about 55% of the second group, with a lower median level among those who did.

The third group had the lowest percentage of persons with antibodies, at 11%, and the lowest level among those who did.

In an email to The Epoch Times, Segev said, “The important message is that natural immunity… is powerful and enduring.”

The Journal of the American Medical Association published the peer-reviewed study, which was supported by charity donations from the Ben-Dov family.

The findings were intriguing, according to Dr. Nasia Safdar of the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine and Public Health’s Division of Infectious Disease, but “likely applicable mainly to a healthy adult population, with the ability and resources to go obtain a blood sample.”

“We’re probably missing the immunocompromised, older, weak set of folks,” Safdar, who wasn’t part in the study, told The Epoch Times via email.

The study “confirms that those with prior infection will have detectable antibody and that antibody may be persistent for up to 20 months,” according to Dr. Jeffrey Klausner, a clinical professor of medicine at the University of Southern California’s Keck School of Medicine. This should give people who recovered from COVID-19 confidence that they are protected and prompt officials imposing vaccine mandates to grant exceptions to the naturally immune.

“Unfortunately, we still don’t know the exact level of antibody that protects against infection versus disease or death,” Klausner told The Epoch Times in an email. “However, that matters less in the current context of living with COVID and accepting the fact that most people with prior infection or vaccination will not get seriously ill.”

Antibodies are only one measure of immunity, according to the study’s researchers. They added it’s yet unknown whether anti-RBD antibodies will protect people from new viral strains.

In December 2021, the Omicron variant became prevalent in the United States, and research suggests it can circumvent vaccine and prior infection protection better than Delta, the strain it displaced.

Natural immunity has been demonstrated to be superior to vaccination in the majority of previous investigations, including when Delta was prevalent. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in the United States backed one study.

However, one important question about the protection is how long it will remain. Due to the uncertainty, some specialists recommend that people get at least one injection of the COVID-19 vaccine, even if they’ve recovered from the sickness, while others point to studies that suggests the immunizations would only provide a minor boost in protection to the naturally immune.

A different, non-peer-reviewed publication revealed evidence of natural immunity in a group of vaccinated and unvaccinated people 18 months after infection in a collection of vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

Segev and other scientists are investigating how Omicron affects the innate immune system, with intentions to publish their findings on a preprint platform soon, according to Segev.

But it becomes extremely important that we listen to our gut, when we notice that someone is eyeballing something that rightfully belongs to you. Our civil liberties are merely gods gift to man interpreted by men of power. No man, woman, government, organization, forum, or anything will prosper as a weapon against God. With that being said, when our God given rights are at stake, it is probably best to question the integrity of those who propose the removal of such rights. In summary, if you’re not a “conspiracy theorist” you probably aren’t asking very many questions about the world around you.
