First I want to say something about a video I saw recently in which congressman Mike Lee, a Mormon, expressed his ire at the fact that the Pentagon has determined that Mormonism is not a Christian religion. This time the gov’t is right. And I’m going to show you exactly why it is right in this message.
That being said, I too have received comments and emails about how the interpretation I have of the Genesis account shows similarities to the Mormon view. So I am taking this time to show that the message given about Adam and Eve in the Bible as well as my understanding of it really bears little to no similarity to what Mormonism teaches.
The claim comes from a book on Mormon belief called The Grace Giver. An email friend I have was sent a page from this book to show the similarities between what the book says and what I teach. And this friend sent it to me.
To summarize the book tells the story of how Eve choosing to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil was her choice to be separated from her father to come to earth.
The purpose for this was so that she too could begin the process required to become a God herself. A process that began with her becoming mortal by eating the fruit. And culminates with her faith in Jesus for the forgiveness of her sins.
According to this Mormon writing this would make her perfect and ready to attain Godhood in the life after death. After attaining wisdom that could only be gotten as a mortal being on earth. The knowledge of good and evil. After being separated from the father that results in making the child long for home.
If you have heard my teaching and have come away with an understanding that in any way resembles this Mormon view. Then let me set the record straight. As this would mean that you have completely misinterpreted what I have taught.
The Mormon believes that men are spirits before they come to earth. This is similar to churchianity(mainline Christianity) teaching that Adam was created a spiritual being. But, not similar to what I teach or what the Bible teaches.
Because to the contrary the Bible says in 1Cor.15:46-48 that men are “not spiritual, but natural” from the time Adam came into existence. And only become spiritual when they are “born again” of the Spirit of God. This is what Jesus taught in John3:1-8.
The Bible also teaches that Adam was the progenitor from which all of the rest of mankind come into existence. And that there is no spiritual preexistence for mankind.
Mormonism on the other hand teaches that eating the fruit was a choice Eve made so that having begun life as a spiritual being she would now become mortal. Because it is only from there that having the knowledge of good and evil she could begin the process of eternal progression to become a God.
Now to the contrary the Bible says in Genesis.2:7 that Adam was a living soul when he was made. Not a living spirit. And says the soul is just the body made from the dust of the ground. And was brought to life only after it was given air by God breathing into Adam’s nostrils “the breath of life”. And this happens to be the same breath of life Gen.7:15,22 says is breathed into every animal, bird, and creeping thing. This breath is what the Bible says made Adam a living soul.
Mormonism teaches that as a spirit child of her father Eve chose to eat the fruit because in her preexistence she knew it would make her mortal. Again, to the contrary the Bible teaches in Gen.3:22 that they were already mortal from the time God made them. And that only now after their eyes were opened to the knowledge of good and evil they would be kept from eating any more from the tree of life so that “beginning to die they would finally die”. Just as God told them would happen if they ate the fruit in Gen.2:17.
So this is not what made them mortal. Eating the fruit from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil only allowed them to now realize they had always been mortal. As they were sent from the garden where now it would be by the sweat of their brow that they would reap food from the ground. And experience death, pain, and sorrow. And that this is what would cause men to “call upon the name of the Lord” as Gen.4:26 says.
This should sound familiar to most everyone. It’s where we get the saying that “There are no atheists in foxholes.” Because when a man comes face to face with his own mortality it is then that he seeks an answer for it. A way out so he won’t simply “cease to exist.” Or end up in hell as the case may be.
However, this process was not one that would culminate in their becoming Gods as Mormonism teaches it is. Rather, it is one that would culminate in their being able to have a relationship and have fellowship with the one and only true and living God. The Creator of all things who stated plainly in Isaiah43:10,11, “I am he: before me there was no God formed, neither shall there be after me.
11 I, even I, am the Lord; and beside me there is no saviour.”
This is a rebuke to any teaching including Mormonism that says there exists more than one true God and Creator of all that has ever been made anywhere and at any time.
The truth is that Mormonism bears zero resemblance to the truth found in the Bible, or the Jesus we find in the Bible.
The truth is that you were never made to become a God.
The truth is that their own “prophet” Mr. Hinckley has said that “the Christ of Christianity is not the Christ of Mormonism.” And he was right! Because also the Genesis account of traditional Christianity is not the Genesis account of Mormonism.
Because the truth is that man came into existence when God made Adam. And there was never a pre existence for any man descended from Adam.
The truth is that Adam was mortal when he came into existence.
The truth is that Adam never had a spirit while he lived on earth.
The truth is that when Adam died he returned to the dust from which he came just as God said he would.
The truth is that Adam never had a spiritual relationship with God.
The truth is he could not have a relationship with God because he was natural and God is a Spirit. And the natural man can not perceive the things of the Spirit of God.
The truth is that Adam was no more separated from God outside the garden than he was while he was still inside.
The truth is that God communicated with Adam the same after he ate the fruit as He did before he ate it.
The truth is that the reason God sent Adam from the garden was that God made Adam for fellowship. And as long as he remained in the garden he could never have fellowship with God.
The truth is that man must be born again to have fellowship with God.
And the truth is that until Jesus came to join with man in our mortality and death. And raised from the dead to conquer death for all mankind. Men could never be born again.
The truth is that unless you are born again you can never inherit the kingdom of God. Because flesh and blood, and that is all any man is when he is born into this world, can never inherit the kingdom of God.
But, only those who have been made children of God by a spirit created in them by God when we confess with our mouth the Lord Jesus, and believe in our heart that God has raised Him from the dead, can inherit the kingdom of God.
The truth is that you need to do this to be God’s child and heir to His kingdom. The truth is that Mormonism’s teachings and beliefs will never make you God’s child or heir to His kingdom. The truth is that this is not even the objective of Mormon teaching.
The truth is that God sent His only begotten Son that whosoever believes in Him will have eternal life. The truth is that if you will believe in the Jesus of the Bible, and reject the Jesus of the cults, then you will have eternal life now. And immortality at the resurrection. The truth is that if you will do this… then I will see you there or in the air!
