Consider God’s promise to Believers in James 1:5, “If any of you lacks wisdom, you should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to you.”
By Edward O’Hara
But, this promise would not be manifested in the first Adam. Paul wrote to Titus teaching that eternal life was God’s promise “before the world began”. He said in Titus1:1,2 “I Paul, a servant of God, and an apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s elect, and the acknowledging of the truth which is after godliness; In hope of eternal life, which God, that cannot lie, promised before the world began”
And Paul was not the only apostle to share this truth. Peter also wrote in 1Peter1:20 that Jesus “was foreordained before the foundation of the world, but was manifest in these last times for you”. So it was from before the world began that there was a promise of eternal life for mankind. A promise that was to be manifested through the coming of Israel’s promised Messiah, Jesus Christ. Not Adam. It would come through God Himself in a man’s flesh joining with mankind in our mortality. So that by defeating death through the resurrection we could have the promised eternal life that these apostles taught was promised before the world began.
This promise could not be manifested in Adam’s creation because he was only flesh and blood. He was only natural, and was not spiritual as Paul plainly says in 1Cor.15:45,46. So God’s promised eternal life was not to come through the first Adam. But, through the last Adam, Jesus Christ. The life giving Spirit. God who came in human flesh.
A body that like the wine bottles Jesus spoke in parable of would eventually burst when filled with new wine. The new wine being a type of the spirit that men receive by the new birth Jesus spoke of in John3.
Jesus told us in John10:10 that the reason He came was so that we could have life abundantly. He said the way to have this abundant life was to believe in Him. In John11:26 Jesus said, “He that believes in me shall never die”. So this abundant life is the eternal life God promised before the world began. A promise God would make good on through the death and resurrection of Jesus.
Jesus spoke to Nicodemus who had asked Him how he could have eternal life saying that he must be born again. Because his fleshly birth only gave him mortal life. And now for eternal life he must be born again of the Spirit. Because what is born of the flesh is only flesh and natural just as Adam was when God made him. Not spirit and immortal as only those who are born of the Spirit are.
So the abundant life is the eternal life that Paul taught Titus was God’s promise to mankind from before the world began. An eternal life that only spiritual beings have. Those who have the firstfruits of the spirit in preparation for the change that happens when we put off this body of flesh and are housed with the new body that is spiritual and eternal.
This is what Paul was telling us in 1Cor.15:19-22 when he said,
“If in this life only we have hope in Christ, we are of all men most miserable. But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept. For since by man came death, by man came also the resurrection of the dead. For as in Adam all die, even so in Christ shall all be made alive.”
So Paul shows us that through the passover Jesus brings God’s promise of eternal life to all who will trust in Him. But, that those who will not trust in Him remain mortal and subject to death’. Because those who will not trust in Jesus for immortality remain as they were from birth. Flesh and blood mortal men just as Adam was when God made him.
We see this later in 1Cor.15 where Paul says,
“So also is the resurrection of the dead…. It is sown a natural body; it is raised a spiritual body. There is a natural body, and there is a spiritual body. And so it is written, The first man Adam was made a living soul; the last Adam was made a quickening spirit. Howbeit that was not first which is spiritual, but that which is natural; and afterward that which is spiritual.”
So here in vs.42-46 we see Paul teaching that those who are born again receive the “afterward that is spiritual”. And that Adam was not eternal when God made him. And that the reason he was not eternal was because he was natural and not spiritual. Showing us that God’s promised eternal life from before the world began did not begin with Adam.
But, that it was His intention to come Himself as a man so that through passover, what many mistakenly call Easter today, men could be born again by trusting in Him and His resurrection. And that this is how men would have the promised eternal life. Through knowing Him and His Son whom He has sent. A personal relationship and loving fellowship with our Creator. This was God’s plan from before He made the world.
Paul goes on in vs.48,49 to say that Adam was of the earth, earthy. And that as is the earthy, such are they also that are earthy. But, that the second man who was Jesus is the Lord from heaven. And as is the heavenly, such are they also that are heavenly.
And that for those who will believe in Jesus as we have borne the image of the earthy, we shall also bear the image of the heavenly.
In vs.51-54 Paul also says, “Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible(unable to be touched by death), and we shall be changed. For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality.
So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory.”
Now at this time when there is a remembrance the Lord’s death, and Christians celebrate His resurrection, we are preaching to the world the way God made for them so we could have eternal life. Eternal life that God promised before the world began. Do you want this eternal life? Will you believe what the Bible says and trust in Jesus for eternal life? Then you must do as Jesus and the apostles said. You must be born again. Born of the Spirit. Because only by doing this will you be able to put on immortality. Pray with me if you want the eternal life God promised from before the world began.
Dear Jesus, thank you for joining with me in my death. So that I can join with you in God’s promised eternal life. Thank you for conquering death. I believe in you and your resurrection. I confess you as Lord. Thank you for saving me and making me your child. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
If you prayed with me then welcome to God’s family. And now begin reading the Bible. And as you read believe what is plainly written on it’s pages. And the Holy Spirit will lead you in the truth. And you will come to know God, and Jesus, and His atonement.
See you there or in the air!
