A lawyer representing clients whose bank accounts were blocked as a result of the trucker convoy protest in Ottawa believes the measure has had a substantial impact on his clients’ lives and will lead to a loss of trust in Canada’s institutions.

Six of Keith Wilson’s clients have their bank accounts returned following bans ranging from one or two days to more than a week, according to the lawyer.

The national police force offered banks a list of names of persons directly involved in the Ottawa protests, according to RCMP Superintendent Denis Beaudoin, who testified before the House of Commons finance committee on March 7. Personal information from the police database, such as whether demonstrators had been suspects of previous crimes or had past “dealings” with police, was included in the material, which resulted in the freezing of 257 accounts of people and businesses.

Wilson claims he saw the investigation report that came with the list and thought it was “amazing” and “quite shocking” because “the only source of investigative material was the CTV news segment on CTV’s website.”

“Who is who?” was published on CTV on February 10th. Four organizers, four influencers, and four people participating in convoy operations were named and brief descriptions were supplied in “A guide to the important participants in the trucker convoy protest.”

“If you look at who’s on that list, it’s because they’ve been vociferous and have been interviewed by the media.” Is speaking out against the government and campaigning for civil freedoms in accordance with our Charter of Rights and Freedoms now the secret criteria for whether or not your bank account will be frozen? Wilson expresses his dissatisfaction by saying, “That’s disturbing.”

Although Beaudoin testified that nearly everyone on the RCMP list was warned ahead of time that their accounts would be blocked if they didn’t leave Ottawa, Wilson claims this is “patent nonsense, blatantly inaccurate.”

“I just received some further data from one of my clients this morning that shows the precise sequence of events, and they received no response from any police force at any time.”

The RCMP was asked for comment by the Epoch Times, but no response was received by publishing time.

Wilson claims that seized bank accounts had a significant impact on his clientele. He claims that travel was made difficult when credit cards stopped working, preventing them from purchasing fuel, and several motels refused to accept cash. According to one trucker with a frozen account, his wife’s diabetic medicine needed to be refilled urgently.

“We were able to find a donor who agreed to pay the pharmacy directly so that this man may receive his medication.” Consider that for a moment. These people were utterly engulfed in their situation. They were powerless to intervene. “This is very serious business.”

A member of the finance committee inquired if joint accounts had been frozen, hurting people’s ability to pay rent and child support even if they were not involved in the protest. “Yes,” replied Angelina Mason, general counsel and vice-president of the Canadian Bankers Association. Banks raised the topic of “humanitarian exclusions,” but it became a “moot point” when the Emergencies Act was soon canceled, she added.

Mason agreed that “there would be something in the system showing a freeze had taken place” even after an account was unfrozen, and that “there is immunity guaranteed” for banks against litigation over frozen accounts.

Wilson was not pleased with the testimony.

“These folks who had their bank accounts blocked will be blacklisted for the rest of their lives,” he stated.

“We all know that when you ask for finance, it’s not a guarantee that you’ll be approved.” As a result of exercising their right to free speech and political criticism, these people now have a shadow hanging over their heads.”

The employment of the Emergencies Act, according to Wilson, has had a “chilling impact” on Canadians’ freedom of speech in general, but not, oddly, on protesters’.

“It made no difference to [my clients’] determination to keep fighting for civil freedoms and speaking out against the government.” But they had a great, huge impact on people’s trust in banks, their fear of governments, and whether or not they should feel comfortable speaking out against government policies,” he said.

“That is not what a Western, modern, democratic country looks like.” An authoritarian administration is defined by this.”

Some of the financial capabilities granted under the Emergencies Act should be preserved, according to the government. “Some of those tools, we will be bringing forth measures to put those tools in place permanently,” Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland said during a press conference on Feb. 18. FINTRAC’s [Financial Transactions and Reports Analysis Centre of Canada] authorities, in my opinion, should be broadened to include crowdsourcing and payment platforms.”

While the banks may be “re-evaluating and questioning if they answered with too much excitement,” Wilson says he still sees overconfident optimism on social media, with people claiming that legal remedies will fix Canadian institutions.

“They’ll say stuff like, ‘The lawsuits will start flying,’ or ‘The attorneys will be busy.’… It’s not that simple. “At the courthouse, there isn’t always a solution,” he remarked.

“I’m usually embroiled in legal battles with governments.” You can sue them, but you’ll have to navigate a very complicated chessboard. They normally have immunity provisions in their legislation, and I’m quite sure the Emergencies Act has one, so you can’t sue them for damages for anything they do under it. The sole exception is if they take control of your vehicles or equipment.”

Wilson believes that recent events have bred distrust in Canada’s institutions.

“The government and the banks have breached a basic trust that is difficult to re-establish. “We now know that the banks will do the government’s bidding at any time,” he remarked.

“In Canada, we have a government that is acting authoritarian.” As a result, our country has transformed, and not for the better.”

Six of Wilson’s clients now have access to their accounts, but he’s still attempting to unfreeze the accounts of three more, according to Wilson.

“They [the three clients’ accounts] are not frozen under the Emergencies Act.” They’re frozen as a result of a civil forfeiture order obtained by the provincial attorney general, as well as a civil order obtained by a class-action lawsuit filed in Ottawa,” Wilson told The Epoch Times.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of a proposed class of affected individuals and entities by several Ottawa residents and businesses against convoy organizers and participants, was successful in obtaining the Mareva injunction on Feb. 17.

The Mareva injunction is a court order that forbids a defendant from selling, withdrawing, or similarly dealing with his or her assets in a way that may deprive the plaintiffs of a remedy after a judgement is rendered. The plaintiffs are seeking damages of up to $20 million for alleged private and public nuisances such noise, air pollution, and interference with the freedom to conduct business.

On March 9, Ontario Superior Court Justice Calum MacLeod extended the order until at least March 31, the next court date in the case, to give the assets more time to be located.

The injunction blocked monies from respondents Tamara Lich, Christopher Garrah, Benjamin Dichter, Patrick King, Nicholas St. Louis, and the non-profit Freedom 2022 Human Rights and Freedoms. Both civil cases seek to redistribute contributed cash that were originally given to help the Freedom Convoy but are now in the hands of the respondents.

Trudeau truly outdid himself by pointing his finger back at his citizens, claiming that the problem is their yearning for medical autonomy. Perhaps citizens wouldn’t be disrupting the economy if globalist sell outs like TrudeauFauciNewsomInslee, and Pelosi weren’t imposing tyrannical COVID-19 legislation on their people. These people are public servants, and will no doubt provide the public service we demand. 37% of the worlds population is being grossly neglected by public officials who seek to aid big pharma catalyze biotechnological innovation. This agenda inherently defies the will of God, and will no doubt come with divine consequence.

We’ve got a long road ahead of us but through faith in Jesus we’re all saved; Including our persecutors. 1 Peter 4:12-14 says: “Beloved, do not be surprised at the fiery trial when it comes upon you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. But rejoice insofar as you share Christ’s sufferings, that you may also rejoice and be glad when his glory is revealed. If you are insulted for the name of Christ, you are blessed, because the Spirit of glory and of God rests upon you.”Stay inquisitive in the word of God, and the world around you.
