A source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to Axios that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) and former President Trump will jointly address the media on “election integrity” on Friday at Mar-a-Lago.

Why this matters Using his connections to Trump as leverage, Johnson is focusing on a cause dear to the right-wing grassroots while Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), one of the president’s closest allies, is threatening to overthrow the speaker.

Additionally, it coincides with Trump’s growing attempts to assert his authority as the presumed GOP nominee by pressuring Congress to “kill” a bill that Johnson is attempting to pass on federal law enforcement surveillance.

After setting up a potential removal vote last month, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) presented her case on Tuesday for House Speaker Mike Johnson’s (R-La.) resignation.

Why this matters Republicans maintain a razor-thin majority, and even the speaker and his allies acknowledged the concern since many on the right are angry with Johnson for pursuing a bipartisan budget agreement.

Rep. Mike Johnson (R-La.) cautioned that removing him as speaker of the House may result in the position being filled by a Democrat or sitting vacant for a “long period of time.”

On March 22, while House members were voting on a $1.2 trillion spending bill, Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) moved to remove the Speaker, arguing that Mr. Johnson was not advocating for Republican policies.

Ms. Greene stated that the spending measure “does not secure our border, but rather funds full-term abortion and transgender ideology in our youth.” “I filed a motion to vacate because the House needs a Speaker who can win for Republicans and our constituents,” he wrote on social media site X.

In an April 10 interview with CBN News, Mr. Johnson stated that if the House chair is resigned, “it’s certainly possible you get a Democrat speaker.”

“I believe 13 other MPs ran for speaker before I was chosen. It would be extremely difficult for anyone to acquire the votes at this point, which means the position would be available for a dangerously lengthy period of time, effectively shutting down Congress,” he warned.

“Now contemplate what’s happening in the globe right now. You’re familiar with China; Xi wants to relocate to Taiwan. Iran has publicly threatened to launch a major attack on Israel. Russia is advancing throughout Ukraine. I mean, if the United States House of Representatives closes down, it is a really serious situation, not to mention the economy. “We have a lot of work to do here.”

Ms. Greene has ignored warnings from fellow Republicans that removing Mr. Johnson may result in a Democrat, possibly House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.). She asserted that Republicans would not support any Democrat in holding the office.
