Attorney General of Texas Ken Paxton has turned down the state’s plea to give over control of Shelby Park, where people enter the country illegally.

The Biden administration ordered Texas officials to provide US Border Patrol agents access to a section of the US-Mexico border that is now under state control, but Texas officials have refused to cooperate.

HNewsWire reports that Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has turned down a request from the state to give up administration of Shelby Park, a public park in Eagle Pass, Texas, where an increasing number of undocumented immigrants are crossing the border between the United States and Mexico.

Answering a request from the homeland security department under Biden, Paxton defended Texas’ actions by pointing to the president’s “open-border policies.”

“Because the facts and law side with Texas, the state will continue utilizing its constitutional authority to defend her territory, and I will continue defending those lawful efforts in court,” Paxton stated in a press release.

The building of a barrier around Shelby Park was authorized by Texas Governor Greg Abbott, which intensified the immigration dispute between the White House and Texas last week. It was also announced by Abbott that border officials would not be allowed “on that property any more.”

The most recent border standoff happened on Wednesday while Biden and congressional leaders were meeting to talk about a possible bipartisan immigration deal.

As his administration attempts to get military assistance for Ukraine through a mediated agreement, Biden discussed the potential immigration package with leaders of the Senate and House representing both parties.

According to NBC, Senate Republicans have warned House members that even in the event that Donald Trump is reelected, the current negotiated agreement will be the best one.

Republican senator from South Carolina Lindsey Graham told reporters on Wednesday, “To those who think that if President Trump wins, which I hope he does, we can get a better deal, you won’t,” according to NBC.

Despite the optimism expressed by Senate leaders about the immigration bill, CNN reported that as of Wednesday night, House Speaker Mike Johnson had not committed to bringing it to the House floor.

Politico asserted that progressive Democrats, especially in light of conservative concessions like restricting the ability of arriving migrants to apply asylum, have vowed to reject the negotiated agreement.

Texas has refused to abide by the border-access edict issued by the Biden administration. Biden, don’t screw around with Texas. Later on, you’ll regret it.
