Even NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio is criticizing Gov. Andrew Cuomo over the latter’s plan to fine hospitals that take longer than a week to clear their COVID vaccine inventory – part of an ambitious push to vaccinate all of the state’s nursing home residents as quickly as possible (a repeat of the springtime’s “grandma killer” episode is the last thing the governor needs right now).

During a press briefing on Tuesday, de Blasio slammed Cuomo for threatening to fine hospitals for moving too slowly one day after the governor announced new restrictions that could leave hospitals open to fines if they move too quickly.

“Why don’t we stop talking about fines and start talking about the freedom to vaccinate?” de Blasio said during a Tuesday briefing, sound like he was on the verge of a major mental breakthrough.

According to the latest CDC data, NYC has administered roughly 119K doses out of the 480.55K vaccines delivered. The city began inoculations in mid-December by inoculating some of the first emergency medicine nurses in the country.

While de Blasio says he “takes full responsibility” for failing to accelerate the process of vaccinations, he also pointed out that part of the delay is related to people or patients refusing to take it. Roughly 30% of those who have been offered the shot have refused, de Blasio said.

Meanwhile, Mitchell Katz, president of the city Health & Hospitals system, says everyone in all 11 public hospitals involved in direct patient care has been vaccinated in the past three weeks.

The next goal is to vaccinate all staff, while Cuomo broadens the eligibility criteria to include pretty much all health-care workers (doctors, nurses and others) who deal directly with the public.

In an encouraging sign, data trended lower last weekend, in the city, with the 7-day average of new cases dropping to 4.06K as of Sunday, from 4.4K during the day prior.

Total hospitalized on Sunday was at 210, just 10 above the public health safety threshold, after hitting a two-week high of 243 on Dec. 28. Citywide, the 14-day average positivity rate was 9.03% as of Sunday, down from 9.22%. The rate of hospitalization in the population stood at 4.07 per 100K for the second consecutive day.

In red states, Republican governors are well on their way to reopening as the coronavirus pandemic curve ‘flattens’ so they can get their citizens back to work and their economies going again.

Meanwhile, in blue states and cities, Democrat tyrants are continuing to keep their people on lockdown for reasons that are no longer ‘based on science.’

That includes New York City Mayor Bill De Blasio, who remains on a taxpayer salary even while depriving his citizens of gainful employment.

On Friday, De Blasio strongly suggested that his current stay-at-home order mandating ‘non-essential businesses’ remain closed could go on for “months,” but that’s no bid deal because small businesses “are hanging on.”

“I’ve talked to lots and lots of business leaders, especially the smallest businesses. They’re very worried about their futures understandably, but they also are hanging on and they know it can be a matter of months until they’ll be back in action,” de Blasio said on WNYC.

Is that so?

No, not according to real data.

As PJ Media notes, for instance, the  National Restaurant Association predicted that 11 percent of New York’s 25,000 restaurants will permanently close by the end of May and the entire travel and leisure industry will lose up to 68 percent of its jobs.

A caller named Cassius from Brooklyn urged Hizzoner to “take a more surgical approach” to the city’s COVID-19 response by finding a way to protect the elderly and health care workers while allowing businesses to reopen.

“We’re on the precipice of destroying the whole city basically,” Cassius said.

De Blasio insisted that he “couldn’t disagree more.”

“Rushing back is consistently proven to have the boomerang effect and make things worse and cause bigger shutdowns because it’s not just about a small number of particularly vulnerable people,” he claimed.

But that’s not true. Health and Human Services Secretary Alex Azar said last week states that are reopening are not seeing spikes in coronavirus cases. Rather, there are spikes in places that remain shut down — like New York City — Azar added.

City Councilman Mark Gjonaj blasted de Blasio’s remarks.

“Out of all the things that have come out of his mouth, this is the most outrageous. He lives in a ‘de Blasio land.’ That is the furthest thing from the truth,” said the Bronx Democrat, who chairs the council’s small business committee, the NY Post reported.

“He is not in touch with reality and all he has to do is walk down a commercial corridor to understand what is happening to our small businesses,” Gjonaj said.

“He is setting up the city for failure. He’s going to leave City Hall in the worse condition that this city has experienced since World War II and the Great Depression,” he said.

The Empire Center’s E.J. McMahon also told the Post that the city has taken an unparalleled financial hit.

“For leisure and hospitality, including restaurants and hotels, the downturn equates to a virtual apocalypse — a job loss of 68 percent,” he said.

“There’s a great concern that many of these jobs are lost,” he added, in reference particularly to the restaurant and retail sectors whose business models are based on volume. “The slow reopening is not going to help the restaurant sector.”

All of which brings us back to the real-time civics lesson we are seeing and the importance of voting. Hopefully, Americans of either party (or no party) living in these enclaves of tyranny will remember who implemented these destructive, incorrect policies.
