The National Institutes of Health has confirmed that President Biden's main medical advisor, Anthony Fauci, has been infected with the coronavirus COVID-19.

81-year-old Dr. Anthony Fauci is completely protected and has had two booster shots, according to a statement from the NIH. The CDC says he has minor symptoms and hasn't been in direct touch with President Biden or other high-ranking government officials lately.

Director Fauci, who has been at the helm of the NIAID since 1984, obtained a positive quick antigen test result and will return to work at the NIH when the results come back negative, according to the agency's announcement.

Paxlovid, an antiviral medication approved by the NIH to lessen the likelihood of Fauci being hospitalized or dying, was verified by the NIH as being used by Fauci.

Since the outbreak of the epidemic in early 2020, Fauci has played a crucial role in the nation's attempts to battle it, advising both former President Donald Trump and Vice President Joe Biden on the government response. Fauci's role has been controversial at times. The WHO called the coronavirus epidemic a worldwide pandemic more than two years ago, yet he has remained uninfected until now.

For most of the epidemic, Fauci was a household figure, often appearing with Trump in White House briefings and on-line briefings by Vice President Biden's COVID-19 Response Team.

He often clashed with Republican senators on Capitol Hill on mitigation initiatives, including mask-wearing and testing requirements, during his public speeches.

In January, he told a Senate subcommittee that he and his family had received threats and harassment as a result of his heightened public prominence. After Iowa police reportedly uncovered firearms and a possible kill list, identifying Fauci, in a California man's vehicle, he was detained in late 2020. The threat emails were sent to Fauci and Dr. Francis Collins, a former director of the National Institutes of Health. A West Virginia man pled guilty last month.

A vast list of government officials, including Vice President Kamala Harris, House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, and other members of Vice President Joe Biden's Cabinet, have now joined Fauci in testing positive for COVID-19 despite having received vaccinations and booster shots.

The extremely infectious Omicron variety would "ultimately locate just about everyone," he predicted in January, but highlighted that Americans who get vaccinated and boosted will fare "pretty well," given that vaccinations protect against hospitalization and death. He added.
