The article focuses on child safety and parenting “in the digital age,” but “the meat of it” is that this approach creates a situation where people will have to link their real-world identity to their phone’s operating system.

Davis discusses how the EU (particularly through the Digital Services Act) is working to fix the age verification problem, but the Meta CEO believes new regulation that “applies to all apps” is needed.
It involves adding “the point of approval” to OS or app stores. The parents would be notified when their child downloaded an app so they could authorize it. (The notion seems to be that parents should “enforce” rules prohibiting certain kids from using particular apps.)
It may not seem like a dependable means to ensure compliance, but it would achieve goals independent from the “think of the children” rationale for age verification.
