According to the Guardian, Russia has restricted Facebook and Twitter access in response for the sites’ limitations on Russian official media outlets such as Russia Today and Sputnik. Now, Roskomnadzor, Russia’s official communications regulator, has stated that both Facebook and Twitter would be blocked in the country. Since October 2020, Roskomndazor claims that Facebook has discriminated against Russian media in 26 incidents. Facebook has been accused of infringing on “Russian citizens’ rights and freedoms,” according to the regulator.
As Russia’s invasion of Ukraine continues, the government has urged tech companies to take action against the invader. “The state-owned Russia Today and Sputnik, and their subsidiaries, will no longer be able to promote their falsehoods to justify Putin’s war,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen of the impact of Russian media.
Facebook President of Global Policy Nick Clegg indicated that the business has received demands to ban Russian official media from “a number of states” as well as the European Union. “We will be banning access to RT and Sputnik throughout the EU at this time due to the extraordinary nature of the present circumstances,” Clegg stated.
Twitter claims to have blocked over a dozen accounts tied to Russian misinformation operations, according to Breitbart News. “On February 27, we permanently terminated more than a dozen accounts and restricted the sharing of various links in violation of our platform manipulation and spam rules,” a Twitter spokeswoman said in a statement. Our investigation is still continuing, but our preliminary results suggest that the accounts and linkages originated in Russia, and that they were intended to stifle public discussion about the current situation in Ukraine.”Source: Guardian here.
