Germany Adopting “Maximum Contact Restrictions” After Christmas.

Germany announced new limitations on Tuesday that would go into effect after Christmas to help prevent the spread of the new omicron variant, which will include contact limitations even for those who have been vaccinated.

Chancellor Olaf Scholz remarked at a news conference Tuesday evening, “I can understand anyone who doesn’t want to hear about the coronavirus, mutations, and new virus variants.”

“However, we cannot and must not ignore the incoming wave.”

Limiting private meetings to ten people, closing nightclubs across the country, and holding huge events like soccer matches without an in-person audience are among the new laws.

The limitations will take effect nationwide on December 28, with states having the option to apply them sooner.

Because family-oriented holidays like Christmas and Easter “have not shown to be big drivers of the pandemic,” Scholz said the government opted to wait until after Christmas to impose additional nationwide restrictions.

However, he stated that restrictions on New Year’s celebrations are vital to prevent COVID-19 cases from overwhelming Germany’s health system.

“This is no longer the time for parties and social evenings in big groups,” Scholz added.

At a meeting on Tuesday, Scholz and Germany’s 16 state governors agreed on the new limits, after the government’s new council of experts called for action to be made countrywide within days since the omicron variety is racing throughout Europe.

Scholz and the governors of the states will meet again on January 7 to consider whether the measures should be maintained or tightened.

The national disease control center announced on Twitter hours before the conference that “maximum contact restrictions” would begin immediately and run until mid-January, and that Germans should limit their holiday travel to “the absolutely necessary.”

In Germany, existing restrictions mostly target the unvaccinated, with proof of vaccination or recovery necessary to enter non-essential stores.

In addition, the selling of New Year’s fireworks has been outlawed across the country.

According to Scholz, the German government is also attempting to accelerate its booster vaccine campaign, with the goal of administering an additional 30 million doses by the end of January by keeping some vaccination facilities open during the holidays.

However, authorities are disappointed that just 70.4 percent of Germany’s population has been properly vaccinated, with only 32.6 percent receiving booster shots.

For the time being, Germany’s infection rate is slowly declining.

The disease control center reported 306.4 new cases per 100,000 residents during the previous seven days on Tuesday, down from 375 a week earlier, and 23,428 new cases every day.

The city of New Orleans has declared that it will extend the requirement for a COVID-19 vaccine, or negative test, to children aged 5 and up in indoor settings.

Philadelphia and New York City are two more cities with COVID-19 vaccine regulations for persons aged 5 and up in public indoor settings.

New Orleans’ decision comes as the city’s public school system implements a COVID-19 vaccine requirement for students aged 5 and above, making it the first of its sort in the country, according to Nola.com.

“We will require proof of vaccination or a negative test at bars and restaurants and other locations for everyone ages 5 and over. Children ages 5 to 11 will be required to show proof of at least one vaccine dose,” Mayor LaToya Cantrell said at a press conference.

The mandate will come into action starting Jan 3rd, conveniently after Christmas.

By Feb. 1, four weeks before Mardi Gras, the requirement will be expanded to two doses of the COVID-19 vaccine or one dose of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine. A negative test will suffice as well.

The COVID-19 school mandates will take effect on February 1st.

Louisiana Gov. John Bel Edwards announced earlier this week that the state’s health department will add the COVID-19 vaccine to the state’s list of compulsory vaccines for students.

“All of Louisiana’s current opt-out provisions for parents will remain in place, meaning no child is forced to get a vaccine if their parents object in writing,” according to a press release from his office.

Previously, the vaccine obligation in New Orleans only extended to people aged 12 and up. Only the Los Angeles Unified School District has enacted a similar school mandate for children aged 12 and up, and the COVID-19 vaccination is available to children aged 5 to 11. After 28,000 pupils remained unvaccinated, the school district postponed the December COVID-19 vaccination mandate deadline for children aged 12 and up until the fall of 2022.

Pfizer’s COVID-19 vaccination for children aged 5 to 11 was previously licensed by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Nov. 2.

As of December 14, 56.5 percent of Louisiana’s population had received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, with 49 percent fully immunized.

The speed by which the government is coming for these children with an experimental inoculation should be seen as a red flag for parents across the board.
