Paul wrote some incredibly inspiring and comforting words. But, none more so than these;
“The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God: And if children, then heirs; heirs of God, and joint-heirs with Christ; if so be that we suffer with him, that we may be also glorified together.
I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us. For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.
For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.
For we know that the whole creation groaneth and travaileth in pain together until now. And not only they but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.”Rom.8:16-23.
These words are inspiring and comforting because these words provide for us the foundation our hope for eternity is built upon. Our hope in the abundant life that Jesus said He came to give men(John10:10). The spiritual life that is necessary to inherit the kingdom of God. Because as the natural men we are from Adam we only inherit what this life offers. Because flesh and blood can not inherit the kingdom of God(1Cor.15:50). So it is not because of the naughty/nice construct as so many falsely teach that men can not inherit the kingdom of God. But, it is because the natural man, the man that is only flesh and blood, is only equipped to inherit a natural kingdom.
So who are these “creatures” Paul taught about that wait for the manifestation of the sons of God? Why are they “subjected in hope” unwillingly to the “bondage of corruption”? And when and how are the sons of God manifested? And why does the body need redemption? What do these things even mean? We will answer these questions and more in this study in God’s word.
Most believers understand that the sons of God are those who have been born of the Spirit as we read in John3:1-8, 1Peter1:23, and in 1Cor.2:14-16. But, what many do not understand is that they have been made sons of God by a literal birth if they have believed in Jesus. A birth that is even more real than the fleshly birth because it created a spirit in them that never existed before that is eternal. So the new birth created a spiritual man that never existed before just as our natural birth created a natural man that never existed before. This is what Gen.2:7, 3:19, 7:14,15,21,22 and 1Cor.15:45-50 plainly says. But, through the new birth, they have the “first fruits” which is their new spirit that Paul says insures for us the “redemption of our bodies” from the power of death. Because when we are born of the Spirit the Spirit of God seals us to God “unto the day of redemption”(Eph.4:30). The redemption of our bodies Paul speaks of in the passage we are studying. And this is something that was needed even before man was sent from the tree of life that brought death to reign over our natural bodies. Because Paul says here that mankind has been natural and not spiritual since God created Adam.
The sufferings Paul speaks of in this passage are the groaning that all who are truly born of God experience because they look longingly for the day when death no longer reigns over our bodies. A suffering that is overall of the natural world we live in. A reign that Paul said began when Adam was sent from the garden in Rom.5:12-14. A reign that God says was brought on not as a punishment for mankind for his disobedience as so many falsely teach. But, is because the man(Adam) became “as one of us to know good and evil”.Gen.3:22. Surely you don’t believe that God punishes men for becoming more like Him, right? Neither do I.
This death that began to reign over mankind also began to reign over the natural world at the same time Adam was sent from the garden. I believe this had to do with Adam having dominion over it because God said “cursed is the ground for thy sake” in Gen.3:17. Again this was not a punishment. It is the natural result of death reigning because the man was no longer allowed to eat from the tree of life. And because it has reigned since that time, it is also since that time that Paul said: “the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope”.
But, what hope could there be in the natural world being subjected to death? This hope is in the fact that ultimately this would bring both man and the natural world into relationship with God in a way that was never possible as long as man remained in the garden. Because by being a natural and not spiritual man could never relate intimately with the spiritual God that made him. And only by being subjected to death in hope could man and the natural world experience “the glorious liberty of the children of God.”
This “glorious liberty” is the spirituality that only “children of God” who are born of the Spirit can have. Liberty that neither man nor nature was made with. For the natural world, it is the spiritual kingdom it never could be while the man remained in the garden that God will make of it when He makes the “new heaven and the new earth”(Rev.21:1). And for the spiritual man, it is the new birth, being “born of the Spirit”, in preparation for him to receive the “… the building of God, a house not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. For in this we groan, earnestly desiring to be clothed upon with our house which is from heaven”(2Cor.5:1,2).
Note how Paul again speaks of the “groaning” that he spoke of in Rom.8 that man and nature are in until now. And notice what delivers man and nature from this groaning is that the believer is to be clothed with the house not made with hands that Jesus is preparing for us. This new body, this house then is the “mansion” of which Jesus said “Let not your heart be troubled: ye believe in God, believe also in me. In my Father’s house are many mansions: if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again, and receive you unto myself; that where I am, there ye may be also”(John14:1-3).
Does anything bring more comfort than these words? And can any other words inspire us more? No, nothing can do this more than knowing that Jesus has prepared a place for us that is a house not made with hands. A mansion that we will live in for all eternity that is impervious to the effects of death that our natural bodies suffer under now.
Do you want to receive the house Jesus has prepared for you that is not made with hands that delivers you into the glorious liberty of the children of God? Have you been born again so you too can inherit eternal life? If you are reading this God is calling you. He loves you and wants you to know Him. Because knowing Him is eternal life.John17:3. So if you do not know Him please take the time right now to pray and confess Jesus as Lord of your life. And believe that He has raised from the dead. If after reading this you do believe in Him then pray something like this and you will be saved: Dear Jesus, I believe in you. Thank you for joining with me in death so that by rising from the dead you conquered my death so that if I follow you I could join with you in your life. Thank you that you raised from the dead so that I could raise from the dead too by trusting in, and clinging to, and relying solely on you. Please give me a new spirit now Lord so that when my time comes I will pass through the wall of death to live with you in heaven forever. In Jesus’ name, amen.
By praying a prayer similar to this one and really meaning it from your heart you will be saved from death to life. From sin to righteousness. And from the wrath to peace with God as you now begin reading the Bible and believing what it plainly says. Because when you trust in Jesus you leave the old life behind where you were only able to relate to and trust in what has been made. And now will be equipped for heaven because you are no longer only natural flesh and blood, but are made a spiritual being ready to inherit God’s spiritual kingdom called heaven. It is because of Jesus’ resurrection because He is the life-giving spirit that makes Him alone the only WAY, THE TRUTH, AND THE LIFE.
