Two Americas were visible on Tuesday as the Dow Jones Industrial Average crossed 30,000 for the first time. Simultaneously, hundreds of vehicles were snaked around a parking lot in Albuquerque, New Mexico, waiting in line at a local food bank.
This suggests the K-shaped economic recovery, one where the rich grow richer and the working-poor are crushed with job loss and insurmountable debts, is getting much worse by the month.
For more on the rapid reemergence of food bank lines, or what will be the new normal in a severely broken economy that is in desperate need of structural reform, Eric Cooper, CEO of the San Antonio Food Bank in Texas, on Tuesday, told CNBC’s Shepard Smith that demand at his food bank has more than doubled this year.
“Pre-pandemic we fed about 60,00 people a week and now we’re seeing about 120,000 per week, and most of those are new to the food bank, and have never had to ask for help before,” Cooper told Smith during an interview on Tuesday evening.
He said, “today, we had a distribution that fed 2,000, and we have these distributions all the time.”
“Food banks around the country have seen this unprecedented demand, and we’re just working as hard as we can to balance the private donations we get, with the public assistance to try to make sure people are fed,” he explained.
Cooper continued: “A child would miss ten meals in a week, and if a mom has two to three kids in school, she’s now feeling the impact of the cost of that food at home, and without employment, kids are going hungry. We hear from schools that kids struggle with their education because they don’t have access to good nutrition.”

And the problem we see here is that many of the key provisions in the CARES Act are set to expire on Dec. 31 – this could be catastrophic for millions of unemployed Americans and risk derailing the economic recovery.
“We just hope that Congress acts quickly, the stimulus package needs to support families to put food on their table,” Cooper said.
And if elevated demand for food banks continues to persist, “meal shortage” could be seen within the next 12 months.
The new normal for millions of America’s working poor appears awfully similar to the 1930s.
It’s a move reminiscent of the springtime COVID-19 shutdown in Texas and across the nation — some grocery store chains are now re-imposing limits on critical items such as toilet paper, paper towels, and disinfecting wipes. The companies say they hope to keep shelves stocked and prevent shoppers from hoarding as they did earlier in the year.
At Kroger, customers can purchase a maximum of two items for products like bath tissue, paper towels, disinfecting wipes, and hand soap. A spokesperson said in an email that the limits began earlier this week and applied in stores and online.
H-E-B in Texas has implemented similar policies in recent weeks. Some H-E-B stores have instituted limits of two purchases of disinfecting and antibacterial sprays, while other stores have limited toilet paper and paper towels to two.
Christopher Brand, a spokesperson for Giant, a grocery chain in the Northeast, said that the company was “seeing little evidence of stockpiling, and there is no need to create panic.” But since the supply chain “remains challenged,” Giant began last week putting a limit of one on purchases of larger toilet paper and paper towel sizes and four on smaller toilet paper and paper towel sizes.
The three companies say supply chains for securing these items. According to data from market research firm IRI, around 19% of paper products such as toilet paper and paper towels and 16% of household cleaning products were out of stock during the week ending November 1.

A lot in that line are just greedy people wanting more. I see my neighbors going to these food lines then come back and sell it to old people who dont have cars to go sit in a line. These fat family’s rolling around in late model cars looking for lines to get in. My neighbors cruise in a 2019 Escalade even the fat kids have iphones that are huge. They have so much junk in their homes. Every year in December they throw out their big screens TV boxes from where they buy new TV’s every December and sell their old ones to others. They have a SNAP card and the lady tells the gooberment people that she is single and she clearly is not as her husband comes home from his construction job every day in his new 2020 Dodge ram truck with that loud muffler. Lots of Mexicans doing this and it’s why we have an influx of illegals coming here. They have learned how to play the system just like the negros. They will be taking and taking for ever unless the people wise up and put a stop to it. The central American caravans will only get worse and worse.
