HNewsWire: The midterm election catastrophe evidently indicated his power has eroded, and the Huffington Post reports that some of the evangelical leaders who helped catapult Donald Trump into the White House in 2016 and then backed him again in 2020 are now turning their backs on him.

This might be an indication that Trump's future attempt for the presidency won't garner the same level of evangelical support as his previous two bids, as pointed out by HuffPost's Ed Mazza. The timing couldn't be worse for the former president.

According to the story, erstwhile Christian supporters of Trump are not only expressing remorse for backing him, but are also telling their followers to stay away from his current campaign.

When asked about the former president's leadership skills, one of them was blunt in their interview with the Washington Post.

Mike Evans, a former member of Trump's Evangelical Advisory Board, claims that "all of us realized that Trump had character faults, but we regarded our connection with him transactional." Our hope was that the Supreme Court would reverse Roe v. Wade. We hoped he would share our commitment to Christian principles. We hoped he'd stand behind the Jewish state. Indeed, Donald Trump has fulfilled and then some all of his promises to Americans.

In spite of this, he said, "Donald Trump can't rescue America. Even he can't help himself at this point. He counted on us to help him become president. When he uttered things that really shocked us, we had to shut our lips and eyes. I'm at a point where I just can't continue in that vein.

According to the article, Robert Jeffress, a prominent figure representing Trump's Christian backers, has also abandoned ship.

Even though he said, "The Republican Party is going toward a civil war that I have no want or need to be part of," he later said that he would "gladly" get back on the Trump train again if the former president obtains the 2024 candidate.

One person criticized the ex-president for behaving "like a tiny elementary schoolchild." Someone more said, "we will be annihilated" if the GOP backs him in 2024.
Now that Donald Trump has declared his third run for the president, many prominent evangelicals who have backed him in the past have begun to distance themselves from him.

Mike Evans said to the Washington Post, "Donald Trump can't rescue America." Even he can't help himself, it seems.

For his part, Evans presented Trump with an award at a White House meeting with a group of evangelicals.

Now he claims he has had enough of Trump and no longer speaks to him.

To paraphrase, "He enlisted our help to secure his election as president. He told the newspaper, "We had to cover our lips and eyes when he spoke things that frightened us. No longer can I continue in that manner.

One of Trump's evangelical advisers in 2016 was Robert Jeffress, a longstanding supporter who recently stated he wasn't ready to back Trump again.

To Newsweek, he said, "The Republican Party is going for a civil war that I have no want or need to be part of," before adding that he would "gladly" back Trump again if he won the nomination.

Trump's plummeting poll ratings among Republican voters make it unlikely. On the day that Trump announced his 2024 campaign, Jeffress appeared to subtweet Trump by tweeting that people should purchase Mike Pence's book.

Furthermore, Jeffress tweeted that he continues to think of Trump as "a terrific friend and our finest president since Reagan."

James Robison of Life Outreach International, another onetime spiritual counselor to Trump, warned in a speech this week that Trump's ego is getting in the way of the goal.

According to the Washington Post, he stated, "If Mr. Trump can't stop his tiny petty problems, how can he expect others to stop larger concerns?"

Apparently, he told Trump:

When you get up and start talking like a kindergartener, you're just hurting yourself. The more you remain quiet, the better off you'll be!"

He was coy about whether or not he intended to vote for Trump in 2024.

Everett Piper, a writer for the Washington Times and a prominent evangelical who has in the past backed Trump, was even more direct, saying that Trump had a major negative impact on the GOP in the midterms and might have an even greater negative impact in two years.

He concluded that this previous week proved one thing: Trump must be removed from office. If he is our candidate in 2024, we are doomed to failure.
