A new study of California jails found that people who got a new COVID-19 vaccine boost were more likely to get COVID-19 than people who didn’t get any COVID-19 vaccine doses.
From January to July 2023, researchers looked at data from 33 state jails to try to figure out how well the bivalent shots, which were first used in the fall of 2022, work.
Researchers found 2,835 cases out of the 96,201 prisoners for whom they had data on COVID-19 testing and vaccination.
They found that 1,187 of the cases were in people who had gotten a bivalent vaccine, while only 568 were in people who hadn’t gotten a vaccine.
The rest were in people who only got old or single-dose shots. No more research was done on that group.
Even though there were more people in the bivalent group (36,609) than in the unvaccinated group (20,889), the rate of infection was still higher in the bivalent group because there were almost twice as many cases.
Infection rates were 3.2% in the group that got bivalent shots and 2.7% in the group that wasn’t protected.
“The bivalent-vaccinated group had a slightly, but statistically significantly, higher infection rate than the unvaccinated group,” wrote Dr. Robert Mayes of the California Correctional Healthcare Services and the other writers.
Researchers divided the inmates by age and found that the gap was bigger among the older ones.
For prisoners at least 65 years old, the rate of infection was 6.4% for those who had been vaccinated and 4.5 % for those who had not. The rates were 4% and 3% for people who were at least 50 years old and in jail.
