As part of Hong Kong’s “dynamic zero” COVID policy, everyone who tests positive for COVID-19, including newborns and children, is placed in isolation facilities with no family contact allowed.

The government aims to roll out mandatory mass testing for the city’s 7.4 million people in March, heightening worries of separation among many local and expatriate families as coronavirus cases reach new daily highs.

Parents’ concerns have grown when officials placed an infected 11-month-old in isolation in a hospital.

All children aged 5 to 11 will be offered vaccines for the CCP virus, the UK government said on Wednesday as its vaccination advisory body gave the green light.

The Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI) on Wednesday published a report advising a “non-urgent offer” of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine, also know as Comirnaty, to the primary schoolers so they may be protected “against severe COVID-19 in advance of a potential future wave of COVID-19.”

Although there are an estimated 5.8 million 5- to 11-year-olds in the UK, those who are clinically vulnerable or who live with someone who is immunosuppressed have previously been provided the vaccines.

The only CCP (Chinese Communist Party) virus vaccine licensed by the UK’s medicines regulator for the age range is a pediatric formulation of the Pfizer-BioNTech COVID-19 vaccine. The vaccination will be given in two doses of 10 micrograms each, which is a third of the typical amount, with at least a 12-week delay between them.

The draft report from the JCVI was apparently obtained by the UK government more than a week ago, and the administration planned to announce its decision on February 21. However, the Welsh and Scottish administrations announced their decision to follow the “yet to be published” report earlier on Wednesday.

The JCVI stated that it reached the recommendation after weighing the health and educational benefits of immunization, as well as the program’s impact on NHS services.

It also stated that the recommendation is one-time only, and that the vaccine offers for all paediatric age groups will be reviewed.

The JCVI said its members believed that the overall potential health advantages of CCP vaccine outweigh the potential health risk, citing official adverse reaction statistics from the United States. However, the program is not likely to have an impact on the present Omicron wave, and its impact on future waves is highly unpredictable, according to the report.

The JCVI stated that healthy 5- to 11-year-olds have a “very minimal probability of acquiring severe COVID-19 illness.”

It also stated that by the end of January, an anticipated 85 percent of the age group would have received COVID-19 and so gained natural immunity, and that some research suggests that natural immunity may last longer than vaccine-induced protection against non-severe diseases.

The JCVI said the expansion of the vaccination group to the healthy primary schoolers is “anticipated to prevent a small number of hospitalisations and intensive care admissions in this population and would provide short-term protection against non-severe infection,” but noted the extent of these impacts is “highly uncertain” due to the unpredictability in the timing, size, and severity of potential future waves.

It also stated that due to the “uncertain timing of any future wave of infection and of the immunization program,” the impact of vaccination on school absences had not been determined.

“The average length of hospital stay for patients admitted to hospital during the Omicron wave was 1 to 2 days,” it added, adding that some precautionary admissions were included.

It also stated that 8 to 10% of children in this age range who received the vaccine missed at least one day of school as a result of the inoculation.

NHS England will begin administering the shots in April, according to British Health Secretary Sajid Javid, so “parents can, if they wish, take up the opportunity to boost protection against any future waves of COVID-19 as we learn to live with this virus.”
