Dems Block Approval Of Keystone XL Pipeline Despite The Urgent Need For Energy Independence From Russia.

The “American Independence from Russian Energy Act,” introduced by House Republicans on Feb. 28, would authorize the Keystone XL pipeline, boost domestic oil and gas production, and prevent President Biden’s executive branch agencies from halting energy leasing on federal land and water, among other provisions. Despite this, the bill was defeated on March 1 by a vote of 221 to 202, virtually exclusively along partisan lines.

Republicans, on the other hand, “speak about energy independence, yet… are the ones who have continuously voted against and opposed green and renewable energy here at home, which is the fastest way to attain true energy independence,” according to Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Massachusetts).

Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) was among the 220 Democrats who voted against the bill, claiming that it could open up the northwest Florida coast to drilling, obstructing military testing and related missions east of the Military Mission Line, which is located at 86 degrees, 41 minutes in the Eastern Gulf.

Gaetz’s opposition was a “completely unjustified issue,” Rep. Westerman stated.

The bill prevents the President and his cabinet from stopping new drilling lease sales on federal land or water, despite the fact that it does not specifically authorize drilling near Gaetz’s district. Any withdrawal of such federal properties from drilling would require congressional approval.

This statement, according to the spokesman, might be used to undercut President Donald Trump’s September 2020 order extending the drilling moratorium off Florida’s northwest coast until 2032.

“I don’t believe Putin cares about environmental goals or anyone’s economy except his own,” he continued.

The law directs the Secretary of the Interior to immediately resume oil and gas lease auctions mandated by the Mineral Leasing Act (MLA), which President Biden first halted in January 2021 with Executive Order 14008.

It also directs the Secretary to hold at least four oil and gas lease sales in Wyoming, New Mexico, Colorado, Utah, Montana, North Dakota, Oklahoma, Nevada, and “any other state in which there is land available for oil and natural gas leasing under the Act [MLA],” among other states.

The Bureau of Land Management, the Bureau of Ocean Energy Management, and the Office of Surface Reclamation and Enforcement are three main Interior Department bureaus and agencies involved in mining and drilling authorization.

On Feb. 28, a federal appeals court dismissed President Joe Biden’s administration’s effort to partially lift the moratorium on the military’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate for a subset of Navy SEALs.

A federal judge stopped the mandate’s implementation for 35 Navy members, many of whom are SEALs, in January, stating that the Navy created a procedure for adjudicating religious exemption applications, “but by all accounts, it is theater,” according to the judge.

The Navy has given no religious exemptions at the time of the judgement. It has still not given any as of Feb. 23.

Officials urged the United States Court of Appeals for the Fifth Circuit to let the military to consider the 35 members’ lack of vaccinations when deciding “deployment, assignment, and other operational decisions.” “Forcing the Navy to deploy plaintiffs while they are unvaccinated endangers the success of essential operations and puts the health and safety of other service members in jeopardy,” they claimed.

The request was denied by a three-judge panel of the court, which noted the disparity in how the branch has handled medical and religious exemption requests.

“Hundreds of medical exemptions from vaccination restrictions have been granted by the Navy, allowing service personnel to apply for medical waivers and become deployable. “However, it has not accommodated any religious objection to any vaccine in the last seven years, thus barring individuals seeking such accommodations from ever being evaluated for medical waivers,” the panel said.
