Did you know that in Dan.9 God has given mankind His time clock for saving the world? In this message I want to show you that this is the purpose for which God gave Daniel the 70 weeks prophecy. To show Israel and the world the things that must happen to bring about mankind’s deliverance from death to life. And the timing of, and the way in which, God’s deliverance is accomplished.
To understand the prophecy’s true purpose it is imperative that we recognize first and foremost that it pertains specifically to Israel under the law. And that the law’s fulfillment that Jesus spoke of in Mt.5:17,18 was necessary in God’s time clock in order to bring an end to the law with it’s ceremonies and rituals. Because these were only intended to mitigate the affects of the imputation of sins by the law. Something God has not done at any other time for any other people as Paul clearly explains in Rom.5:13 and 2Cor.5:19. Effects that would last for Israel from Moses “until faith came” as Paul says in Gal.3:19-25.
This truth is plainly stated throughout all of Paul’s epistles. And as we look at Gal.3 we see that the law was given because of transgressions. This was meant as a preservative for Israel as a nation to keep them separated to God, and from the world. This was to insure that the serpent’s desire to corrupt humanity that God alluded to in Gen.3, and almost became a reality in Gen.6, would never be fully realized. So that the promised Messiah would come through a people who were of a purely human bloodline. Heb.2:14-18 explains why this is so important. Otherwise Jesus would not have been fully human.
To show this is the true meaning of Daniel’s prophecy we will begin reading in vs24 where God tells Daniel,
“Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy.
Know therefore and understand, that from the going forth of the commandment to restore and to build Jerusalem unto the Messiah the Prince shall be seven weeks, and threescore and two weeks: the street shall be built again, and the wall, even in troublous times.
And after threescore and two weeks shall Messiah be cut off, but not for himself: and the people of the prince that shall come shall destroy the city and the sanctuary; and the end thereof shall be with a flood, and unto the end of the war desolations are determined.
And he shall confirm the covenant with many for one week: and in the midst of the week he shall cause the sacrifice and the oblation to cease, and for the overspreading of abominations he shall make it desolate, even until the consummation, and that determined shall be poured upon the desolate.” Dan.9:24-27.
In vs.24 we see first- Who the vision is for. And second- We see the purposes fulfilled by this vision. Those being that it will A. finish transgressions. B- It will make an end of sins. C- It will make reconciliation for iniquity. D- It will bring in everlasting righteousness. E- It will seal up the vision and prophecy. And finally F- It will anoint the most holy. And the letter to the Hebrews shows how Jesus’ 1st coming fulfilled all these things.
However as we read the next couple verses we see that not all that Daniel prophesied has been fulfilled. So in turning our focus to the last 2 verses in this passage we see what needs to happen as the time of the end it appears that we are currently witnessing winds down.
Beginning with the coming of Messiah we see that He comes at the end of the 69th week. Which is also the beginning of the 70th week. So Messiah came on the scene at the exact time when 483 years of the prophecy had already elapsed. Leaving 7 years yet to be fulfilled.
Then vs.26 tells us that in the middle of the 70th week He is “cut off but not for Himself”. John3:16 “For God so loved the world He gave His only begotten Son…” is a testament to the fact that Jesus came and was cut off not for Himself. Because He was cut off for all mankind. As the means for all who will believe in Him to be saved.
The next thing we see in this verse is a prince that looking back through history we know to be of the Romans that ruled during Jesus’ day. A prince that Daniel says shall come who will “destroy the city(Jerusalem) and the sanctuary(the temple)”.
The mention of this prince fits parenthetically between this verse and vs.27 where we see that a covenant is to be confirmed. This covenant is between Messiah and Israel for one week. We know this is only for one week because Daniel says when Messiah comes it is at the end of 69 weeks. Leaving one week yet to be fulfilled.
And we know it is Jesus that confirms this covenant because Paul says in Gal.3:17, “that the covenant, that was confirmed before of God in Christ, the law, which was four hundred and thirty years after, cannot disannul, that it should make the promise of none effect.” This shows that the law could not void the promise. Rather the promise to Abraham of a righteousness that is by faith without works, that existed before there was any law, would continue long after the seed to whom the promise was made came which Paul said would be the expiration date for the law.
With this in mind continuing in vs.27 we see that after confirming the covenant with many for this final week when vs.26 says Jesus is cut off, it is in the middle of the week. This then is the cause for the sacrifices and oblations cease. They were caused to cease because His sacrifice was the final one once for all sacrifice for sins under the law.
This made any further sacrifices Israel made for sins under the law not only unnecessary. But, actually considered by God to be an “overspreading of abominations”. So here God showed Daniel that there would be Israelites who would reject Jesus and would continue doing the animal sacrifices. And that when they did, the sacrifices Israel continued doing would be considered by God to be an “overspreading of abominations”.
“For by one offering he hath perfected for ever them that are sanctified.
Whereof the Holy Ghost also is a witness to us: for after that he had said before, This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, saith the Lord, I will put my laws into their hearts, and in their minds will I write them; And their sins and iniquities will I remember no more.
Now where remission of these is, there is no more offering for sin.”
Vs.27 goes on to say that this “overspreading of abominations” is what brought the “desolation”. This “desolation” was the destruction of the temple that happened in 70ad. And it was to continue this way until the “consummation”. The time of the end when Jesus comes with the new Jerusalem. Where after the great tribulation believing Israel will have their promised kingdom. Where they will reign with Christ for a thousand years.
One of the things this correct reading of this passage does for us is to help us see that there is no need for a rebuilt temple and all the trappings that go with it. As so many have mistakenly been taught must happen before Jesus returns. Because the prophecies of vs.24 have all been fulfilled. And all that is left is the “consummation when that determined shall be poured out on the desolate” that vs.27 says will culminate with Israel’s promised Messiah returning to conquer the beast, the dragon, and the false prophet. To set up their promised kingdom on earth. The kingdom Jesus told them they would inherit in Mt.5:5.
To show Israel where they were in reference to the final week of Daniel’s prophecy Jesus said in John5:43 that He came in His own name and they did not receive Him. This was the first 1/2 of the final week of Daniel’s prophecy. And He told them that another will come in his own name and him they will receive. This is the last 1/2. So this means that there is only 3 1/2 years, 42 months, or 1260 days left of the final week that will fulfill for Israel all that these verses in Dan.9 says are to be fulfilled.
This helps us understand where we are in history in reference to Daniel’s prophecy. And with Paul’s admonition to the Thessalonians in ch.5:3 we know there is a time yet future when “they are saying peace and safety”. And that only afterward will the world be cast into sudden destruction. A time of great tribulation that Jesus said is worse than any time in history.
But, even more importantly we can see how Daniel’s prophecy helps us understand God’s plan of salvation foretold in them. The fact that Paul shows in Gal.3:17 that Jesus confirmed the covenant with many Israelites when He came the first time. And the fact that since this was accomplished the “time of the Gentiles” Paul spoke of in Rom.11 has commenced. And the fact that Israel was blinded in part so that the Gentiles could be joined with Christ until their fulness has come in. Shows just how much God loves His creation. And how very near it appears we are to meeting Jesus in the clouds, and the fulfillment of the last 1/2 of the final week of Daniel’s prophecy.
So it is during this time described by Paul as the dispensation of the grace of God that God is bringing as many as will to come into His kingdom. It is during this break in the 70 weeks timeclock between the 1st and last 1/2 of the 70th week that God’s deliverance for mankind from sin and death takes place. Not by works + faith as is God’s decree for Israel under the law according to Ez.18:20. But, by grace through faith without works for every Jew or Gentile who will believe in Jesus now so they will be invited to His banqueting table.
Will you come also? Will you confess Jesus as Lord? And believe in your heart that He has raised from the dead? God has done all of this so that all who will can have eternal life. Pray with me if this is what you want.
Dear Jesus, thank you for fulfilling the 1st 1/2 of the final week of Daniel’s prophecy. Thank you that in being cut off in the middle of that week you ended the law for Israel, and began a New Covenant for all men who will trust in you. I confess you as my Lord. And believe you raised from the dead. Please give me your eternal life. Make me your child. So that I will inherit your kingdom. In Jesus’ name, amen.
If you prayed with me then welcome to God’s family. Trust Him as you read the Bible so that He will lead and guide you into all truth.
See you there or in the air!
