Former President Donald Trump announced on June 8 that special counsel Jack Smith had indicted him in connection with an investigation into his handling of classified documents.
“The corrupt Biden administration has informed my attorneys that I have been indicted, seemingly over the Boxes hoax,” Trump wrote on his social media platform, Truth Social. He continued by mentioning the parallel investigation into President Joe Biden’s handling of classified documents.
Trump stated that he has been summoned to appear in federal court in Miami on June 13 at 3 p.m.
“I never imagined such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States, who received far more votes than any sitting President in our country’s history and is currently leading all candidates, both Democrats and Republicans, in the polls for the 2024 Presidential Election.” “I AM A DUMB MAN!” Trump penned a letter.
The indictment came just days after Trump’s lawyers spent about two hours inside the Department of Justice (DOJ) on June 5, apparently discussing their concerns about how the case had been handled.
In a May 23 letter to U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland, his attorneys requested the meeting “to discuss the ongoing injustice” of the special counsel’s investigations into Trump.
On Thursday evening, one of Trump’s attorneys, Jim Trusty, told CNN that the charges are related to the Espionage Act.
Republicans were outraged by the news of the indictment, claiming that America now has a two-tiered justice system.
“It is unconscionable for a president to indict the leading opponent.” “For decades, Joe Biden kept classified documents,” wrote House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) on Twitter.
“I, and every other American who believes in the rule of law, join President Trump in opposing this grave injustice.” House Republicans will hold those responsible for this brazen weaponization of power accountable.”
Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) called it “a complete and total failure to the American people” and a “stain on our nation that the FBI and DOJ are so corrupt that they don’t even hide it anymore.”
“We don’t have a republic if the people in power can jail their political opponents at will,” Sen. Josh Hawley (R-Mo.) wrote.
Democrats, on the other hand, claimed that the indictment demonstrated that the American justice system is functioning properly.
“The former twice-impeached president is now twice-indicted,” wrote Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI).
“No one should be above the law in the United States of America,” Pennsylvania Democratic Rep. Dwight Evans wrote.
“Just to remind you, no one is above the law.” “Not even a former president,” said Adriana Espaillat (D-NY).
Trump’s indictment on state business records charges in New York on March 30 has already cemented his place in history. In that case, he became the first former President of the United States to be charged with a felony; he has pleaded not guilty to all 34 charges stemming from an attorney’s “hush-money” payment to an adult film performer.
While Trump’s detractors argue that he should be held accountable, he and his supporters argue that he is the victim of politically motivated persecution. His critics claim that he is attempting to play spoiler, obstructing Trump’s raging bull quest to upend Washington’s bureaucracy.
“The Democrats’ indictments of Trump for these non-crimes… are part of a lawfare campaign to keep Biden in power,” The Epoch Times’ attorney Mike Davis, founder and president of The Article III Project, which seeks to uphold the Constitution, said.
Some Republican presidential candidates reacted to Trump’s indictment shortly after it was announced.
“The weaponization of federal law enforcement represents a mortal threat to a free society,” tweeted Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
“For years, we have seen an uneven application of the law based on political affiliation,” he wrote.
Meanwhile, entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy wrote on Twitter, “I never thought we’d see the day when the U.S. President deputizes the DOJ to arrest his leading rival in the middle of an election.”
“This is an affront to every citizen: we cannot devolve into a banana republic where the party in power uses police force to arrest its political opponents,” he continued. “It’s hypocritical for the DOJ to selectively prosecute Trump but not Biden.”
“I was the first candidate to call on @JoeBiden to pardon Trump so that the country can move on to more pressing issues, such as $32 trillion in debt, a broken border, and a war in Ukraine.” I still stand by it. “Pardon Trump right now!” he tweeted.
Larry Elder, a conservative commentator, criticized America’s justice system.
“Yet another partisan prosecution!” Hillary violates the Espionage Act and continues to skate. Whistleblowers from the FBI and DOJ describe a two-tiered justice system. The doctor of the FBI informant claims Joe and Hunter were paid $10 million in bribes. “O.J. Simpson will find the killer or killers of Ron and Nicole before the Hunter investigation is finished,” he tweeted.
Former Arkansas Gov. Asa Hutchinson reiterated his call for Trump to abandon his presidential bid.
“With the news that Donald Trump has been indicted for the second time, our country finds itself in a position that weakens democracy,” he said in a statement.
Leaks about Trump’s impending indictment came at a critical time for Biden, who was accused of accepting a multimillion-dollar bribe from a Ukrainian company that employed his son Hunter while Biden was vice president.
Trump has claimed that federal prosecutors attempted to bribe an attorney representing a witness and also offered a judgeship in the Biden administration to a lawyer if his client would “flip” against Trump.
The DOJ declined to comment on Trump’s allegations, according to HNewsWire.
Other investigations may yield more charges. Smith and a Georgia prosecutor are also looking into Trump’s denial of the 2020 election results, which declared Biden the winner.
Simultaneously, another special counsel, Robert Hur, has been investigating Biden’s handling of records discovered at various locations, including a locked garage where he keeps his Corvette. Trump’s home was searched, but not Biden’s. Trump has pointed out that as a vice president or senator, Biden would not have had the authority to declassify the records he possessed.
According to a court document filed in Trump’s home state of Florida, the government was conducting a criminal investigation into “improper removal and storage of classified information in unauthorized spaces, as well as unlawful concealment or removal of government records.”
A person who has “unauthorized possession” of any document that could be used to harm the United States faces up to ten years in prison under federal law. Other laws prohibit concealing, mutilating, falsifying, or destroying certain records; some sections of the law carry a maximum sentence of 20 years in prison.
Authorities point to the Presidential Records Act of 1978, which transferred presidential and vice presidential records to public ownership. The act also established a new statutory framework for presidents and the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA) to manage presidential records.
On June 4, former Trump lawyer Timothy Parlatore told NBC’s “Meet the Press” that NARA had deviated from previous outgoing presidents’ customary procedures.
Typically, the Government Services Administration transfers the records to a facility near the former president’s residence and gives the president two years to sort through anything personal, according to Parlatore. After that, the remaining presidential records are returned to NARA.
Instead, the administration moved the records to Trump’s home and then demanded that they be returned to NARA immediately, according to Parlatore. This resulted in a squabble between Trump and NARA. He claims that if NARA had suggested moving the documents to a facility near Trump’s home in Mar-a-Lago, Florida, the situation could have been resolved.
Authorities claimed that Trump and his team were uncooperative, which resulted in the FBI’s infamous raid on Mar-a-Lago on August 8, 2022, while Trump was in New York.
Trump has repeatedly railed against the possible indictment on his Truth Social account, just as he did when the New York case became more public.
On June 5, Trump posted a message on his platform about the document investigation, expressing his surprise that the DOJ could charge him despite apparent similar document issues with previous presidents as well as the current one.
“Joe Biden won’t be charged for anything,” Trump wrote, “despite the fact that he has 1,850 boxes, much of it classified.” Some of the documents date back to Biden’s time as a senator in the United States. Furthermore, Trump claimed that both former President Bill Clinton and his wife, Trump’s 2016 election opponent Hillary Clinton, went unpunished despite being found to have kept sensitive records in less-than-secure conditions.
Trump claimed that single-handedly targeting him amounted to “the greatest witch hunt of all time.”
Trump has been railing against Smith since at least January 12. Smith was described by Trump as a “Trump-hating thug” who is married to a “serial and open Trump hater.” Trump claimed in the same post that Smith, while working as a prosecutor in Europe, “put a high government official in prison because he was a Trump-positive person.” Trump also stated that Smith is “best friends with the craziest Trump haters.”
At the time, Trump declared that “the box scam is a hoax.”
