Deputy Prime Minister Defends Ottawa’s Use of Emergencies Act

Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland defended the Liberal government’s use of the Emergencies Act to deal with protesters in Ottawa, claiming that the demonstrators are attempting to “usurp the authority” of the democratically elected government.

Freeland made the comments during a virtual press conference on Feb. 18 to update the public on the government’s efforts to stop the protest, which began on Jan. 29. Several cabinet members, including Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino, Justice Minister David Lametti, and Minister of Emergency Preparedness Bill Blair, as well as Government House Leader Mark Holland, were in attendance.

“Today, our economy and democracy are under attack from a foreign-funded adversary,” Freeland stated.

“We must not allow these illegal blockades and occupations to usurp the authority of democratically elected governments.” They must and will not be permitted to endanger peace, order, and good governance. These illegal blockades and occupations will come to an end, and they will come to an end permanently.”

The federal government’s decision to use the Emergencies Act, according to the majority of Canadian premiers, was unnecessary.

According to a note from House Speaker Anthony Rota, MPs were scheduled to resume debate on the Liberal government’s use of the Emergencies Act on Friday, but the meeting was canceled due to a police operation to deal with protesters outside the Parliament Hill precinct and in the city’s downtown core.

“I want to emphasize that this is a historic and critical debate. We will ensure that any member of Parliament who chooses to speak has the opportunity to do so, and we will not allow the pause to affect the eventual outcome, which is a robust debate followed by a final vote early next week,” he said.

Into February 18, a large police force descended on Ottawa, with some officers using assault guns and what seemed to be rubber bullet launchers. As a backup, armored vehicles are also brought in.

The Ottawa Police Service and the RCMP have began to conduct enforcement steps in the last 24 hours, according to the public safety minister, which he termed as “an crucial turning point” in the operation.

Three leaders of the “Freedom Convoy” protest in Ottawa were arrested on Feb. 17, but the organization declared in a statement posted on Twitter on Friday that they will not back down.

“Three of our organizers were taken into custody. “The police have detained Chris Barber, Tamara Lich, and Daniel Bulford in the order of their arrest,” the statement read.

“This is a grass-roots movement, and others will step in to fill the gaps.” We’re going to keep holding the line. We will not submit to power abuses. “The entire world is watching.”

The protests began in response to the federal government’s vaccine requirement for truck drivers entering Canada from the United States, which took effect on January 15. If they wish to escape a two-week quarantine upon readmission to Canada, Canadian truck drivers must be properly vaccinated, according to the regulation.

As the trucks journeyed cross-country to Ottawa, where they arrived on Jan. 29, the protest quickly grew into a national movement, with many people uniting to oppose all COVID-19 regulations and restrictions.

On Feb. 14, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau invoked the Emergencies Act, giving police broad new powers to deal with the demonstrators, including the right to compel towing companies to remove vehicles parked in the city’s central business district.

The federal government has introduced several measures to minimize protest funding, including expanding anti-money laundering processes to crowdfunding platforms and digital currencies. Individuals or corporations engaging in the protests will be able to have their accounts frozen by banks.

“Our law enforcement authorities and Canada’s financial services firms are already sharing information. Freeland stated, “Action is being taken.”

“Your bank account will be frozen, and your insurance will be suspended if your truck is utilized in these protests.” The penalties for participating in these illegal blockades are severe.”

It’s obvious that the declared state of emergency by Trudeau is motivated by his particular distaste for those who hold liberty dear to their hearts. And this irrelevant deputy prime minister has done nothing but identify herself as yet another sell out in the Canadian government. The neighboring provinces even believe he is over reacting. However that doesn’t take away from the fact that these individuals are being arrested and fined for standing up against medical tyranny. If demonstrators claim they won’t leave until the mandates are lifted, it is the job of the public servant to adhere to the needs of the public. Any other action taken constitutes that individual to be relieved of their responsibilities as a political figure. Stay inquisitive in the word of God, and the world around you.

On Feb. 15, Ottawa police chief Peter Sloly resigned abruptly amid widespread protests in the city against federal COVID-19 directives.

Sloly confirmed his resignation in a statement on social media.

“I am announcing my resignation as Chief of the Ottawa Police Service with a heavy heart,” he stated.

“Since the beginning of this protest, I’ve done all in my power to keep this city safe and put a stop to this unprecedented and unanticipated crisis. We’ve added additional resources and enforcement tools to our arsenal, as well as establishing the new Integrated Command Centre. I am certain that the Ottawa Police Service is now in a stronger position to put an end to the occupation.”

During an Ottawa Police Services Board meeting, city councillor Diane Deans stated that the board and Sloly had “reached a mutually agreed-upon separation.”

Deans thanked Sloly for his service and stated that “this is a labor relations concern,” and that no more remarks will be made.

Deputy Chief Steve Bell of the Ottawa Police Service will serve as interim police chief until the board names a permanent replacement.

Dean stated that the board’s top objective is to put in place a plan to bring the continuing demonstration in the nation’s capital to a peaceful conclusion.

Truckers objecting to COVID-19 immunization rules for cross-border transit started the protests. Many sympathizers joined the action as convoys of truckers made their way to Ottawa, turning it into a large-scale protest against all COVID-19 regulations and restrictions.

Many demonstrators say they aim to stay until the COVID-19 directives are lifted as the protests approach their third week.

The protests have prompted the city of Ottawa, the province of Ontario, and the federal government to proclaim states of emergency.

On Feb. 15, Public Safety Minister Marco Mendicino announced the establishment of an integrated command centre for the RCMP and OPP to collaborate with municipal police in the ongoing protests.

The federal government, according to Mendicino, is focused on ensuring that Ottawa police, as well as the RCMP and OPP, have all of the tools they need to “restore public order” in the city.

On Feb. 14, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau used the Emergencies Act to address the protests, giving officials more ability to remove the trucks that have been parked in the city’s central core since the end of January.

The statute also gives the government the authority to revoke citizens’ right to assemble if there is a “reasonable anticipation” that it will result in a disturbance of the peace.

Citizens may also be barred from entering or leaving certain regions, as well as from using specific property. The government can also seize control of public facilities and services and order citizens to perform necessary tasks.

The premiers of Alberta, Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Quebec have all spoken out against Trudeau’s use of the Emergencies Act.

An Ottawa city council meeting scheduled for today has been rescheduled for Feb. 16 to give local legislators more time to learn about the situation.

Furthermore, the city claims that the federal decision to invoke the Emergencies Act necessitates additional research and analysis in order to give the council and the public with a greater knowledge of the options now available.

As we know, Trudeau’s use of the emergencies act is a massive overreach that has been detested by various public figures in Canada. It goes without saying that if he does not walk back his hasty decision, the intensity of coming demonstrations will surely increase. As far as police chief Peter Sloly goes, it seems as though he is attempting to step down and be glorified by the left leaning communists in support of the oppression of those who chose to opt out of this mass biological experiment. Nevertheless, nothing these tyrants do or say will force us to relinquish our faith in Christ. 1 Peter 3:17 says: “For it is better to suffer for doing good, if that should be God’s will, than for doing evil.” Stay inquisitive in the word of God, and the world around you.
