U.S Government Coercing Conscientious Objectors To Sign Up For Selective Service.

At a time when tensions between NATO and Russia are increasing, the US government agency in charge of overseeing conscription, should a military draft be resumed, issued on Twitter on March 23 a hypothetical treatment for conscientious objectors.

The Selective Service System tweeted, “In the case of a draft, our agency would cooperate with @fema [Federal Emergency Management Agency] to provide chances to conscientious objectors to ensure our nation keeps moving forward.”

“Today, all conscientious objectors are forced to register with the Selective Service System,” it said, linking to a webpage. The webpage did not go into detail about how SSS will collaborate with FEMA.

On Twitter, the message generated a stir.

“I vehemently oppose any form of compulsory’service,'” wrote @therealbertprmo.

In an email interview with The Epoch Times, Michael Migliana, the SSS’s acting deputy director, said, “While there is currently no draft, registration with the Selective Service System is the most publicly visible program during peacetime that ensures operational readiness in a fair and equitable manner.”

He said the latest tweet was “part of our overall awareness campaign,” noting that the agency had sent out a tweet with the same message on July 19, 2021. FEMA is one of many state and federal agencies to which conscientious objectors could be assigned as part of the Alternative Service Employment Network if a draft were to be authorized.

FEMA was one of seven such organizations that have signed a new or modified Memorandum of Understanding with the Selective Service System, according to Migliana.

“In the past, the SSS had MOUs with some private nonprofit organisations to accept assignments of conscientious objectors for alternative duty,” said Edward Hasbrouck, a journalist for the non-interventionist website antiwar.com who covers selective service issues.

“Many of the memorandums of understanding, including all of the ones with private businesses [nonprofits], were signed years ago and had since expired.

“In order to make its’readiness’ appear more believable, even though it’s evident that it wouldn’t be able to carry out a draft in the face of inevitable resistance,” Hasbrouck continued, “the SSS has made it a priority recently to re-up and negotiate more of these agreements.”

“One of the agency’s preparation requirements is that conscientious objectors be placed in one of six permitted occupations: health care services, educational services, environmental programs, social services, community services, and agricultural activities,” Migliana stated.

“Our agency would quickly offer troops to the Department of Defense while also providing an alternate service program for conscientious objectors if permitted by the President and Congress.”

“The SSS also publicizes its readiness to process conscientious objectors as a way of deterring anti-draft activism by instilling false confidence in people who object to war and conscription that they will be able to apply for conscientious objector status and that the SSS will deal with conscientious objectors and assign them to alternative service,” Hasbrouck said.

“What the SSS doesn’t say, of course, is that most people who oppose a war don’t qualify for conscientious objector status, and many people who do will almost certainly be rejected by militarist draft boards.”

Almost all male U.S. citizens and male U.S. immigrants between the ages of 18 and 25 are required to register with the agency. Women are excluded from this rule.

To approve a new draft, Congress would have to change the Military Selective Service Act and give the President the authority to induct troops.

Following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last month, the risk of direct conflict between NATO and Russia has grown.

Hasbrouck believes that current developments in the country demonstrate the futility of military conscription.

“The Russian invasion of Ukraine demonstrates the dangers of placing unreasonable expectations on a conscript army’s willingness to fight, as well as how the supposed availability of an endless supply of draftees emboldens war planners and makes military adventurism more plausible,” he said.

The notion of collective defense was strengthened by Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty, which founded NATO in 1949. It means that if any member state is attacked, all other countries will respond.

Norway, Latvia, Lithuania, Estonia, and Poland are NATO members that border Russia directly. Turkey, a NATO member with a tumultuous relationship with Moscow, is separated from Moscow by the Black Sea.

Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, Hungary, and Romania are among the NATO member states that border Ukraine.

As mentioned above, once signed up for selective service one is NOT guaranteed to be classified as a conscientious objector. In fact, the militarist draft boards hold an inarguable bias. In the event of an all out war, the department of defense will need all the people it can get. The facts are, the conscientious objectors CANNOT find themselves shoulder to shoulder with willing and able warriors. They’ll only get in the way, and cause more casualties.
